It’s safe to say, we’re all looking forward to seeing Taraji P Henson in Abbott Elementary! The actress is making a guest appearance on the hit ABC sitcom, but what role is she stepping into?
As you may know, Abbott Elementary has previously mentioned the star character Janine Teagues‘ mother, but soon… viewers will be able to put a face to the name. Reportedly, Janine’s mother, Vanetta, will be played by Empire icon Taraji P. Henson in the penultimate season two episode, appropriately titled “Mom,” airing on April 12.
According to Variety, who broke the news first, the casting coup was revealed at the Abbott Elementary panel at PaleyFest in Los Angeles on Saturday (April 1).
On Saturday, the fictional school’s Twitter account also announced the news by publishing a picture of the show’s star and creator Quinta Brunson posing alongside Henson.

According to THR, Janine (Brunson) prepares a solo getaway for Memorial Day weekend in “Mom” but has to cancel when Vanetta shows up unexpectedly and requests Janine’s assistance. Gregory (Tyler James Williams) strives to improve his interpersonal abilities in another plot line in the episode.
On the March 8 episode “Teacher Appreciation,” Janine and her sister Ayesha (Ayo Edebiri) clashed about Ayesha’s leaving Philadelphia and alluded to some of their past with Vanetta.
During that dialogue, Janine said to Ayesha, “You know how much dealing with Mom is, but you got to leave and go to Colorado and be cool and interesting. Meanwhile, I am still here dealing with her by myself.”

“People had hopes for you, and they gave up on me. You had it together. I didn’t. And I couldn’t get together when Mom… when the person who needed me the most was the most disappointed in me,” Ayesha said in response.
Henson, an actor who has received Emmy and Oscar nominations, won a Golden Globe for her portrayal of Cookie Lyon in the Fox musical drama Empire. Along with Hustle & Flow, Hidden Figures, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, and TV series Person of Interest, the leading lady has numerous other noteworthy credits.
