Becoming a mother is a life-changing experience, but raising sons comes with its own set of challenges. Don’t believe me? Just ask these inspiring Black celebrity moms! These women have embraced motherhood while simultaneously balancing their careers. These inspiring celebrities have pioneered paths in the entertainment industry but they are also a part of contributing to the next generation. Let’s dive in and see the wisdom that these proud celebrity boy moms have shared about raising their sons.

1. Mariah Carey

Mariah Carey had her son Moroccan on April 30, 2011, with her ex-husband Nick Cannon. Moroccan has a twin sister named Monroe. In Carey’s memoir, The Meaning of Mariah Carey, she expressed wanting her kids to have her same initials. Moroccan was named after the “Fantasy” singer’s New York City apartment which has Moroccan-inspired decorations.  Despite their parents’ celebrity status, Carey tries to keep her son grounded as much as possible. The star explains, “It’s hard, but I try to keep them grounded so they don’t think everything is just handed to them.” However, Moroccan has still enjoyed some celebrity perks. He has walked red carpets, been on multiple yacht vacations, and was on stage for the 2022 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. The “We Belong Together” singer has a close bond with her son as they went on a Valentine’s date earlier this year. Carey posted the date to her Instagram calling her son her, “funny Valentine.”

Tia Mowry gave birth to her son Cree on June 28, 2011. She shares her son with her ex-husband Cory Hardict. Cree is no stranger to the spotlight as he has accompanied Mowry to several events, including the 28th annual Kid’s Choice Awards, the Los Angeles Premiere of How To Train Your Dragon 2, and Spider-Man: No Way Home. The ‘Sister, Sister’ alum is always finding opportunities to gush about her son, especially on Instagram where she wrote, “I am just endlessly proud of him, and even though he tries to act grown, he’ll always be my baby!”

While being a single mother, Mowry offered some words of advice saying “It’s about learning how to be aware and present with myself, and tapping in and making sure I too am taken care of. How can you take care of other people if your cup isn’t filled?”

Ashanti and Nelly welcomed their baby boy Karem “KK”  into the world on July 18, 2024. This is the singer’s first baby and entry into motherhood. When speaking to People Magazine about the lessons motherhood has taught her, the “Rain on Me” singer explained that patience is key. Ashanti is also thinking ahead for baby Karem as she is planning her next tour and wrote a children’s book.

The “Happy” singer states, “I wrote a children’s book, and I kind of want to just dive into the lane of children now. I do because it’s just so natural. I loved kids before. I used to work at a daycare center. I loved kids before, but now it’s like a million.”

For Ashanti’s Bring It On tour, she is expecting to have extra luggage and more hands on deck now that she has baby Karem in her life. The singer wants to be more aware of her set schedule and her surroundings. In her words, “I’m definitely in Mama Bear protective mode, wanting to protect the baby.”

Keke Palmer brought baby Leo into the world with ex-boyfriend Darius Jackson back on February 25, 2023. Palmer and Leo are joined at the hip. While visiting The Jennifer Hudson Show, the KeyTV owner gave fans an update on her baby boy, stating, “His personality is coming through — he mocks everything I do. I’m like, ‘Okay,’ he’s like, ‘Okay.’ Like, everything. And it’s just so amazing to see them grow in real time. It’s insane, it’s like ‘I can’t believe you were in my belly!'”

When it comes to how Leo has changed the former child star’s life, Palmer expresses, “My son has given me such a new life, you know what I mean? It’s been an experience that I can’t even explain.” As for advice for other mothers, the One of Them Days actress believes that having HelloFresh is a staple. “it’s always good to be able to know that you can just have easy meals ready,” the star explained.

Black Celebrity boy moms remind us that motherhood can be rewarding yet challenging even in the spotlight. The love that these celebrities have for their sons is inspiring and shows that a mother-son bond is everlasting.
