Largely known as the vocal powerhouse of multi-platinum selling R&B group Xscape, veteran award-winning R&B / Gospel singer-songwriter-entrepreneur LaTocha, née Scott-Bivens, who hails from Atlanta, Georgia, is also an actress – both big and small screen(s) – executive producer [‘Xscape Still Kickin’ It’ and ‘SWV & XSCAPE: The Queens of R&B’], author [LaTocha’s Planted Lifestyle], as well as an advocate of health & wellness through her lifestyle brand, Made Girl. She loves chatting about what she’s working on. Our LaTocha interview brings readers up to the minute on the leading lady!
Parlé Mag: First things first, you literally left it ALL on the floor with this amazing rendition of Chris Brown’s “Residuals”— A huge kudos (to you) to and / for that! #residualsversechallenge
LaTocha: Thank you so much! This song spoke to me the first time I heard it. I connected deeply with the emotion and the story behind it, and I wanted to pour my heart into it. Seeing the love and beautiful comments from everyone truly means so much to me—I feel the love!

Parlé Mag: Now what actually prompted your decision to tackle such heavy emotional topics; the break-up of your 30-year marriage to Rocky Bivens, the falling out with your sister, Tamika, and being “kicked out,” as you stated, of your group, Xscape?
LaTocha: Music has always been my therapy. It’s where I can be the most honest and vulnerable. I’ve been through a lot personally and professionally, and instead of letting it weigh me down, I chose to put it into my art. I believe in using music to heal, not just for myself, but for anyone else who may be going through similar struggles.
Parlé Mag: Both Tamika and former group-mate, Kandi Burruss, have since gone public with their own personal responses to your version of “Residuals” — Thoughts?
LaTocha: Everyone is entitled to their own feelings and perspectives. For me, this was about expressing my truth, my emotions, and my journey. I can’t control how others respond, but I can control how I move forward—with love, grace, and peace.
[Ed.Note: on Monday, March 3, LaTocha confirmed on ‘The Big Tigger Show’ that Her and Tamika recently had their first talk – “a really good talk” – in two years.]
Parlé Mag: In April 2023, you dropped your sophomore album, The Invitation: A Conversation with God, on Motown Gospel—although a very solid body of work, were you happy with the overall performance of that record.
LaTocha: Absolutely. That album was a deeply personal and spiritual project for me. It was about reconnecting with my faith and inviting listeners into that space. Success isn’t just about numbers—it’s about impact. If the album touched even one soul, then I did what I was supposed to do.
Parlé Mag: Switching gears here, what exactly do you want people to get from your music?
LaTocha: I want people to feel something—whether it’s healing, joy, love, or even just a sense of release. I want my music to be a soundtrack for people’s lives, something they can turn to in both good and difficult times.
Parlé Mag: If you could collaborate with any one artist, living or dead, who would it be and why?
LaTocha: Whitney Houston. Hands down. She was one of my biggest inspirations growing up, and her voice, her presence, and her storytelling were unmatched. To sing alongside her would have been a dream come true.
Parlé Mag: If you could play any venue in the world, which one would you choose and why?
LaTocha: The O2 Arena in London. The energy there is incredible, and to be able to share my music with that kind of audience would be an unforgettable experience.
Parlé Mag: On a more serious note, are you happy with the current state of R&B? And, even more specifically, why do you feel that we, the masses, don’t see the group dynamic like it was back in, say, the nineties?
LaTocha: R&B is still alive and evolving, but I do miss the era when groups dominated the scene. There was something magical about harmonies and storytelling in groups that felt like family. I think the industry has shifted towards solo artists, but there’s still a place for groups if the right chemistry and dedication are there.
Parlé Mag: What do you feel has and will continue to be the key to your longevity?
LaTocha: Staying authentic. I’ve never tried to be anything other than who I am. People connect with realness, and as long as I continue to put my heart into my music, I believe I’ll always have a place in this industry.
Parlé Mag: Do you have any other outside / additional (future) aspirations, maybe even completely away from music?
LaTocha: Yes! I’m passionate about empowering young girls through my Made Girl Foundation. It’s all about giving them the confidence, resources, and support to chase their dreams. I also have a love for acting and would love to explore that more.
Parlé Mag: To date, what has been your biggest career moment(s), at least thus far anyway?
LaTocha: There have been so many, but performing at the BET Awards with Xscape was a major highlight. Also, seeing fans sing along to my solo music—it’s an indescribable feeling.
Parlé Mag: What’s an average day like for you?
LaTocha: Every day is different! If I’m not in the studio, I’m spending time with my family, working on Made Girl Foundation, or handling business behind the scenes. I also make sure to take time for self-care and reflection.
Parlé Mag: Please discuss how you interact with and respond to fans…
LaTocha: I love connecting with my fans. Whether it’s through social media, meet-and-greets, or just seeing them at shows, their support keeps me going. I try to respond as much as I can because I truly appreciate every single one of them.
Parlé Mag: What is your favorite part about this line of work? Your least favorite? And, why?
LaTocha: My favorite part is performing. There’s nothing like being on stage and feeling the energy from the audience. My least favorite? The misconceptions. People see the glitz and glam, but don’t always understand the sacrifices and hard work that go into it.
Parlé Mag: What advice would you have for someone wanting to follow in your footsteps?
LaTocha: Stay true to yourself. This industry can be tough, and people will try to mold you into something you’re not. Always know who you are and never compromise your values.
Parlé Mag: Looking ahead, say five or maybe even ten years from now, where do you see yourself?
LaTocha: Still making music, still inspiring people, and hopefully expanding my brand into other ventures—whether it’s fashion, acting, or more philanthropy. I just want to continue growing and evolving.
Parlé Mag: As for the immediate, what’s next for you, Tocha?
LaTocha: Right now, I’m focused on my new music, including my latest single, “Love Changes.” (dropping soon) I’m also working on new projects and collaborations—so stay tuned!
Parlé Mag: Lastly, Xscape are responsible for so many classics; “Just Kickin’ It,” “Understanding,” “Love on My Mind,” “Tonight,” “Feels So Good,” “Who Can I Run To,” “The Arms of the One Who Loves You,” “My Little Secret” and “Softest Place on Earth” — Do you have a personal fave when it comes to performing live? And, why?
LaTocha: “Who Can I Run To” is definitely one of my favorites. The harmonies are so rich, and the emotions in that song always hit deep when performing it live. The fans love it, and I love giving them that moment.
Parlé Mag: Is there anything I left out or just plain forgot to mention?
LaTocha: I think you covered it all! Just want to say thank you to everyone who has supported me throughout my journey. It truly means everything.
Parlé Mag: Lastly, any “parting” words for our readers?
LaTocha: Spread love. Life is too short for negativity and drama. Stay focused on what brings you joy, and always move with purpose. Thank you for rocking with me—I appreciate y’all! You can follow me on social media: @iamlatocha.
