If you didn’t know, Afrobeats megastar Davido recently released his much-anticipated album 5ive, and as expected, it’s been making waves! The project, which hit the shelves on Apr. 18, holds a 17-track selection, with features from Chris Brown, Victoria Monét, Becky G, Shenseea, and Musa Keys, among others. However, one bop, in particular, that has the fans in a frenzy is his now-viral collaboration with fellow Nigerian crooner Omah Lay. This is the Davido “With You” lyrics explained.

From TikTok’s trending sounds to hangouts with her or even the homies, the two-minute phenomenon has become a full-on anthem, prompting listeners to get lost in the richness of the melody. For some, it’s the dance-worthy rhythm that Davido’s voice effortlessly rides and pulls them in. For others, it’s the soulful, expressive intro by Lay, striking them with enough feels to lift them into euphoria.

If you ask us, we’d say the magic of “With You” lies in how Davido and Lay managed to tap into something meaningful while still giving us a record that makes you want to move. It has become a standout from the full-length, recognized as Davido’s fifth studio effort, but what is being said in these verses?

Here’s our brief interpretation of the song’s highlight moments.

#GuesstheMeaning: The Davido “With You” Lyrics Explained

Omah Lay’s Confession

At the beginning of “With You,” Lay poetically enters with an intimate opener, setting the tone for a vulnerable admission. He starts with, “Baby, the weather, it’s getting cold inside”—a line that instantly signals loneliness. While feeling “cold inside” could indicate physical discomfort, it usually points to emotional emptiness. Lay’s uttering of such suggests that he’s missing someone deeply, a lover who’s (seemingly) far away.

He follows with, “Double sweater, I am young,” which implies he’s trying to protect himself emotionally. The reference to being young may hint at immaturity or inexperience in dealing with the intensity of love and heartbreak.

When he says, “Ordinary, paranoid,” one can assume Lay is alluding to deep insecurity. He sees himself as average and is overthinking, possibly doubting whether he’s worthy of the person he loves.

Then comes this part: “I can’t picture this world without you in my life.” Here, Lay fully acknowledges and confesses his feelings. It is a raw declaration of love and dependence. If he loses her, he might lose himself.

Davido is Playful and Confident

Davido’s part is a complete energy shift. From Lay’s melancholic sensitivity, we move into Davido’s confident, flirtatious, and playful tone.

He kicks off with: “Sweet Fanta Diallo, I no fit forget you.”

“Fanta” is a flavored drink, so, from the sound of it, calling his lover “Sweet Fanta Diallo” is a way of saying she’s irresistibly sweet and unforgettable.

Throughout his verse, Davido uses humorous and cheerful ad-libs like “Uzobu zobu” and “Cho-cho-cho no working.” These phrases don’t necessarily carry literal meaning but a fun vibe, displaying a lighthearted, witty perspective of the love song.

He then goes on to flirt and praise his lady’s beauty with this line: “If you see my baby, you go shut up, oh. Idiarabanko!” For those who’ve been fans for a while, this is the classic Davido who loves boasting about how stunning his woman is, with “idiarabanko” being exuberant Nigerian slang referring to her figure.

Toward the end, Davido turns more sensual as he says, “Oya baby, lay down oh. Finish work for me,” denoting closeness and trust. It appears to be an attempt to encourage her to take the lead and show certainty in their connection.

Final Thoughts

“With You” is a beautifully conducted track, but there’s a contrast in how both artists approach their verses. Lay’s part feels like a heartfelt avowal, as he’s in love but unsure if it’s mutual, while Davido is apparently high-spirited, secure, and openly romantic.

The song candidly captures two sides of love: the longing and uncertainty of unrequited feelings, and the confident joy of a love that feels solid.
