Melissa Mercado, the NYPD detective who went viral after appearing in the music video for Hip-Hop artist S-Quire, has been removed from her role in the Special Victims Unit and reassigned. The NYPD detective’s viral twerking video has created all kinds of backlash and this is the latest fallout from the situation.
After initially being sidelined from active investigations, Mercado has now been transferred to the 50th Precinct in the Kingsbridge section of the Bronx.
The NYPD has remained almost silent on the situation, but their actions speak volumes about their displeasure with the level 3-grade detective’s involvement in the racy video. Before this controversy, Mercado was well-respected within the force. She was credited with 54 felony arrests and 81 misdemeanor arrests, an achievement that earned her an Excellent Police Duty award in 2022.
Now, she’s trending for entirely different reasons, which is her twerking and on dancing on a stripper pole in S-Quire’s “Doin’ That” music video. The video, which to date has racked up over 2.2 million views, has won her a wave of new fans, but it has also raised eyebrows within the NYPD forces.
According to sources, one of the main concerns behind her reassignment was the fear that her promiscuous public image could be used against the Special Victims Unit.
Additionally, the NYPD is investigating whether Mercado followed proper protocol before appearing in the video. If she bypassed department regulations, she could face further disciplinary action.
While Mercado’s police career may be in jeopardy, she has garnered a new wave of popularity in Hip-Hop. In an interview with TMZ, Pitch Perfect, the director of the music video, shared his thoughts on the controversy:
“Everyone loved this model,” he said. “I’ve had tons of artists reach out trying to get her in their videos.”
Laughing, he continued, “If you look at it like that, it might be a great thing for her. I think she wins.”
With Mercado now at the center of public and media attention, will she fight to stay in law enforcement or embrace her new calling in entertainment?
