How to Write a Funny Wedding Speech: 6 Tips for the Perfect Toast

1. Know Your Audience: You must tailor your humor to the couple and the crowd. An excellent wedding speech must be written so that the audience is carried along. Even if you’re a college friend or work colleague, the speech should be clean for older people, relatable for other friends, and understandable for kids. End with a toast.

Example 1: If the couple is into a particular TV show, you could start with a quote. If the crowd is more traditional, keep the jokes clean and heartwarming.
“Dearest friends, we are gathered here today not just to celebrate (Couple’s Names), but to witness a love story worthy of Lady Whistledown herself. And, just like in Bridgerton, I’m pretty sure there’s been some scandalous behavior leading up to this wedding.”

Example 2: “Are you ready for a love story, a story of two hearts, a story of friendship? No, wait, wrong musical. But seriously, (Couple’s Names), your love is as magical and hopefully, less likely to involve melting.”

2. Start Strong: You can start with a killer line or a funny punchline to grab everyone’s attention. The first few seconds of your speech will set the tone, so start strong.

Example 1: “Good evening, everyone! For those of you who don’t know me, I’m (Your Name), and I’m the reason (bride’s or groom’s name) is still single… until now!”

Example 2: “Hello everyone, I am the (bride’s or groom’s name) best friend. Marriage means sharing everything from your bed, password, body, and best friends. Just don’t call me during work hours.”

3. Embrace Self-Deprecation: A little self-mockery can go a long way, but don’t take it too far. The joke should make you relatable while breaking the ice and putting smiles on everyone’s faces.

Example: “When I was asked to give a speech, I was thrilled but realized I had to write a good one. So, if this is terrible, blame the bride or groom.”

Example 2: “I’m not going to lie, I’m a little nervous about giving this speech. I’m much better at eating cake than public speaking.”

4. Practice, Practice, Practice: Rehearse your speech so you’re comfortable and can deliver the jokes smoothly. Practice the delivery, pauses, and timing. You can practice in front of someone and get their feedback on the jokes.

Example: Practice before a mirror, a pet, or a friend. The more you rehearse, the more natural you’ll sound.

Example 2: Prepare in case something else happens at the wedding, try to wind it into an inoffensive joke. Don’t aim for perfection; remember, your social life for the next few weeks depends on it. Try “What was I saying? Well, marriage is all about forgetting embarrassing things.”

5. Avoid Risky Topics: Keep it positive by not mentioning past relationships or anything that could make anyone uncomfortable. Avoid topics that are clear exes, controversial topics, or anything that could embarrass the couple. Ensure a balance of banter and humor, and cross-check the speech with another person before the wedding. The roast should be a light tease to evoke laughter.

Example: “(Groom’s Name), you may think you’re her best friend now, but I’ve been here, through the good, the bad, and questionable fashion choices. Just saying!”

6. End on a High Note: Finish with a heartfelt message and a toast to the happy couple. Also include well-wishes and prayers for their new union.

Example: “(Bride’s Name) and (Groom’s Name), you two are amazing together. May your life be filled with love, laughter, and a lifetime of happiness. To the happy couple!” Raise your glass.
