The name Al Manerson might not always be in the headlines, but his impact on the music industry is undeniable. From growing up in Orchard Park—the same neighborhood that gave us New Edition—to shaping the careers of some of today’s biggest artists, Al has spent more than 20 years redefining what it means to build a lasting legacy in music. As a behind-the-scenes force in R&B, Hip-Hop, and beyond, he’s known for his ability to spot talent, nurture careers, and stay true to the art while navigating an industry obsessed with quick hits. In our Al Manerson interview, we sat down with him to talk about his journey, the secrets to longevity, and what’s next for R&B as it reclaims its space at the top.

Parlé Mag: Al, you’ve built a remarkable legacy in the music industry over more than two decades. Growing up in Orchard Park, how did your early environment and cultural roots influence your passion for music and your journey into the industry?
Al Manerson: Growing up in Orchard Park, I was surrounded by creativity, resilience, and a strong sense of community. Music was part of everyday life, from local talent to neighborhood artists making their voices heard. Seeing New Edition emerge from the same environment showed me what was possible and inspired me to not only pursue a career in music, but to focus on shaping it—helping artists achieve longevity and authenticity in everything they do.

Parlé Mag: Throughout your career, you’ve worked across multiple genres—from Gospel to Hip-Hop to R&B. How has this versatility influenced your approach to artist development and industry strategy?
Al Manerson: Working across genres taught me that great music and great careers are rooted in understanding the artist, their culture, and their audience. Gospel taught me soul and storytelling, R&B showed me emotional connection, and Hip-Hop taught me timing and cultural relevance. This versatility allows me to tailor strategies for each artist, ensuring their music resonates while building sustainable careers.

Parlé Mag: You’re known for your focus on longevity and building careers that last. In an industry often driven by viral moments and quick hits, what do you believe are the essential elements for creating sustainable success in today’s music landscape?
Al Manerson: Sustainable success comes from a combination of talent, strategy, and authenticity. Artists need a clear vision, a team they trust, and music that connects beyond the moment. It’s also about timing, brand alignment, and making decisions that build legacy, not just immediate hype.

Parlé Mag: Having contributed to major projects with legendary artists like Mariah Carey, Michael Jackson, and Snoop Dogg, what are some of the most memorable moments or lessons learned from working with these icons?
Al Manerson: Each artist taught me something different. Mariah Carey reinforced the importance of vocal precision and artistry. Michael Jackson taught me the power of creativity and showmanship at the highest level. With Snoop, it was about timing and cultural impact. The biggest lesson across all of them is that true success combines talent, work ethic, and understanding your audience.

Parlé Mag: Your work with artists like Zendaya, Wale, and Mint Condition has helped redefine what’s possible for R&B and crossover success. How do you see the future of R&B evolving within the current musical climate?
Al Manerson: R&B is reclaiming its rightful place in music. It’s evolving by blending traditional soul with modern production, collaborations, and cross-platform storytelling. My goal is to make R&B relevant to today’s audience while preserving its depth, emotion, and credibility.

Parlé Mag: You’ve played a pivotal role in helping artists secure new deals or re-establish their catalogs, such as your work with Mint Condition and Stokley. What is your approach when helping artists navigate these opportunities and long-term career planning?
Al Manerson: I approach each opportunity strategically, looking at both creative and business outcomes. It’s about reclaiming control, aligning with the right partners, and making moves that support the artist’s vision for the long term, not just immediate gains. With Stokley and Mint Condition, it was about securing catalogs, building deals, and positioning them for renewed success.

Parlé Mag: Your influence extends beyond music into film and television, including projects like Coming to America and Honey 2. How do these experiences inform your approach to artist development, music placement, and entertainment strategy?
Al Manerson: Film and television taught me how music can enhance storytelling and connect with audiences in new ways. It also showed me the importance of cross-platform thinking—how a song, a placement, or a performance can build an artist’s brand and reach while creating additional revenue streams.

Parlé Mag: As a Grammy-nominated songwriter and producer, what do you consider your most significant creative achievement to date?
Al Manerson parle magAl Manerson: Co-producing Wale’s first number-one album The Gifted with Stokley was a defining moment. It not only topped the charts but also demonstrated how collaboration, vision, and timing can create cultural impact. Executive producing Zendaya’s platinum single “Replay” and helping develop artists like Leela James are also milestones that reflect both creative and strategic success.

Parlé Mag: Your company, BluRaffe Entertainment Group, operates as a full-service entertainment and lifestyle brand rooted in stability and authenticity. How do you see independent companies like yours shaping the future of the industry?
Al Manerson: Independent companies have the agility to innovate, build authentic relationships, and take creative risks. Moreover, BluRaffe focuses on long-term growth, artist development, and cross-platform integration. As a result, independent companies can not only compete with majors but also lead in shaping culture and defining trends.

Parlé Mag: In an industry constantly chasing what’s next, you emphasize what’s lasting. What advice would you give to emerging artists and industry professionals about building a career and legacy that endures?
Al Manerson: Focus on your craft, understand the business, and surround yourself with people who believe in your vision. Don’t chase trends; build a foundation that will support your career for decades. Longevity requires patience, discipline, and authenticity.

Parlé Mag: You’ve received numerous awards and honors, including the Key to the City of Atlanta and the proclamation of ‘Al Moses Manerson Day.’ How do these recognitions influence your motivation and future vision?
Al Manerson: These honors are humbling and motivating. They remind me that the work I do impacts communities and culture, not just charts. They fuel my commitment to building meaningful projects, mentoring artists, and pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in music and entertainment.

Parlé Mag: With R&B reclaiming its rightful place at the forefront of music, what upcoming projects or initiatives are you most excited about?
Al Manerson: I’m excited about launching new R&B talent, developing multimedia projects, and continuing to create strategic collaborations that put the genre back in the spotlight. BluRaffe is also expanding into film, television, and cross-platform initiatives that integrate music in fresh ways.

Parlé Mag: Looking back at your extensive career, what do you consider your most meaningful contribution to the culture and industry?
Al Manerson: Helping artists realize their vision, reclaim their work, and create lasting impact is the most meaningful. From Wale’s The Gifted to Stokley’s career resurgence, to shaping young talent like Zendaya, my goal has always been to preserve artistry and integrity in an industry that can easily compromise both.

Parlé Mag: Finally, what legacy do you hope to leave behind, both as an innovator and as a champion for authentic, lasting music?
Al Manerson: I want to be remembered as someone who built careers, not just hits; who restored credibility to R&B and empowered artists to achieve longevity; and who proved that integrity, strategy, and vision can shape the industry and culture for generations to come.
