Only a week after the release of his new track, A Bar Song (Tipsy), the song is officially number one spot on n Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart knocking Beyoncé’s ‘Texas Hold ‘Em’. The only question on everyone’s mind now is “Who is Shaboozey?”

Shaboozey’s style is truly unique, blending a diverse range of genres, including hip-hop, country, rock, and Americana. He first captured the spotlight with the track Start a Riot in collaboration with Duckwrth, featured on the soundtrack of the critically acclaimed animated movie, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. He is certainly an artist to keep an eye on.

There’s a lot to know about the 29-year-old singer, he’s a very talented and distinct singer. Though his earlier music had more of a trap influence, his later songs had more of a folk-pop sound with acoustic guitar.

1. Who is Shaboozey?

Collins Obinna Chibueze, born on May 9, 1995, known by his stage name Shaboozey, is an American musician, singer-songwriter, filmmaker, and record producer.

You must have been wondering how an American bears a name of that sort, well you’re right. 

Shaboozey’s roots run deep and he is Nigerian American. Despite being born in Virginia, his parents hail from Nigeria, a country rich in culture and traditions. His father, a farmer by trade, instilled in him an appreciation for the land, while his mother’s influence can be heard in the harmonies of his music, reflecting the rhythms of his ancestral homeland.  

3. How Did Shaboozey Get His Stage Name?

The origin of Shaboozey’s stage name is a fascinating journey, rooted in the rich cultural heritage of his Nigerian roots. Chibueze, his surname, meaning “God is king” in Igbo, has been misinterpreted and thus transformed into his memorable and distinctive moniker. 

It all began with a mispronunciation of his surname, Chibueze. People started calling him ‘Chiboozy’ instead, and from there, it morphed into the quirky and catchy Shaboozey.

From the soulful harmonies of African folk music to the tunes of country music, his sound is truly one-of-a-kind. Growing up in Woodbridge, Virginia, he was exposed to a wide range of musical styles, from hip-hop and pop to classic rock, further expanding his musical horizons. It’s this blend of influences that makes Shaboozey’s music so captivating.

When Shaboozey was in junior high, his parents made the decision to send him back to Nigeria, his ancestral home, to attend a boarding school. This experience was a crucial part of his formative years, allowing him to fully immerse himself in the culture, language, and traditions of his roots.  

5. Shaboozey’s song reaches number one on Billboard

 His song, ‘A Bar Song (Tipsy)’, has not only become a chart-topping hit, but it has also made history by replacing Beyoncé’s ‘Texas Hold ‘Em’ as the number one song on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart.

This historic moment signifies a shift in the country music genre, as it marks the first time that two Black artists have held the top spot consecutively. A monumental achievement for Shaboozey, and a sign of progress for diversity in the industry.

This milestone was achieved shortly after Shaboozey collaborated with Beyoncé on two tracks from her eighth studio album, Cowboy Carter. ‘Sweet * Honey * Buckiin’ reached 61 spot on the Billboard Hot 100, while ‘Spaghettii‘ on the 31 spot.
