Akon Suggests Africans Are Better Stage Performers Than Americans

First, Akon backs Nick Cannon‘s “be fruitful and multiply” ideal — and now this! In a recent interview, the “No More You” singer compared African and Black American music performers, and implied that Africans simply have better presence on stage than Americans do. “We’re [Africans] a little different when it comes to stage presence,” Akon remarked.

A clip from Akon‘s interview on the Zeze Millz Show has started circulating on the web where he compares Black American entertainers to African ones, hinting that ‘Africans run circles around Americans’ on the stage. The hard-boiled comments came after Millz gave kudos to an upcoming African musician for his sharp performance skills. “In America? Oh yeah, them ni**as gonna be wobbling, pants hanging half down, bored as hell, half asleep ’cause they high as hell. But in Africa, I mean look at these YouTube clips of all these kids from Uganda, these kids are performers,” said Akon.

Akon continued cross-checking Black American and African performers: “So for us [Africans], it comes naturally to watch the kids from Africa. It’s in their blood. Performing is like second nature for us.” Naturally, Twitter wasted no time reacting to Akon’s polemic point of view, with Hip Hop Homicides host Van Lathan even calling out the Konvict Muzik mogul. “It always comes back to shi**ing on Black Americans, especially after they’ve made millions imitating Black Americans,” said Lathan.

“This is framed in a way to trigger me, lemme chill. @Akon, you’re my guy and you can’t mean African-Americans in general? Ain’t no way!” tweeted Hot 97’s Ebro Darden. A random user tweeted an image of Prince with a caption that read: “Akon really said that sh** as if we do not have iconic Black American artists/performers. I mean the list is long, honey.” Even Ghanaian-born writer/activist Anna Gifty tweeted: “As a Ghanaian-American, I hate this with every fiber of my body for so many reasons, but what really gets me about this entire “conversation” is Akon using AAVE while degrading African-Americans.”
