When thinking about the ring on your finger, sparkle and shine isn’t the only thing to consider. The shape of your diamond is one of the first things people notice and it says a lot about your personality and fashion sense. Knowing the shape also goes a long way in choosing the right diamond.

But with so many pretty diamond shapes on the market, making a choice can be downright overwhelming. Like with fashion, jewelry trends change over time, and professional diamond cutters are always coming out with beautiful new shapes to “wow” jewelry lovers. So, what’s a gal to do?

This article will explain the most popular diamond shapes, their meanings, and how to make the right diamond shape choice that fits your style.

Popular Diamond Shapes

Firstly, note that a diamond shape is different from a diamond cut. You may hear shape and cut discussed interchangeably, but they are actually quite different. While a gemstone professional must cut the diamond to produce a shape, the shape refers to the overall form of the diamond, while the cut refers to the diamond’s facets and proportions.

There are a number of popular diamond shapes available, each one uniquely beautiful and meaningful. Read on to learn about the the right diamond shape, the different shapes, their meanings, and which one might be a good fit for you.

Round Diamonds

The round diamond is by far the most popular diamond shape out there. While it’s been around since the 1700s, it was refined in 1919 by Marcel Tolkowsky into what we know today as the “round brilliant cut” diamond.

The shape’s 57 or 58 facets cause the light to bounce from the bottom of the diamond and back through the top. This is what gives the round diamond its remarkable sparkle.

Timeless, versatile, and elegant, this classic diamond shape won’t be going out of style anytime soon. If you’re on the more traditional side and are looking for lots of sparkle and shine, the round cut may be the perfect choice for you.

Square Diamonds

Another traditional choice is a square-shaped diamond. The most popular choice after the round, square diamonds are also quite similar to rounds in that they are designed for optimal sparkle and shine.

The most popular square cut diamond is the princess diamond. With their defined corners and brilliant sparkle, square diamonds are perfect for long fingers. Moreover, they could be easily found in any part of the world, especially in Dallas. Also, Dallas jewelry stores have the shiniest diamonds that you’d love to wear on a special occasion. For instance, a princess cut is a great option for those wanting a more refined and elegant look.

There are other upsides to these diamonds as well. Square diamonds are not only more affordable than the rounds, but they are the most environmentally friendly as they don’t create a lot of waste when being cut. So, they’re good for your looks, your wallet, and the environment!

Oval Diamonds

While the oval is one of the oldest known diamond cuts, it still presents with a modern appearance. Not only that, but as a modified version of a round diamond, it gives off a similar level of brilliance and fire.

The oval is a great choice for those with small hands or short fingers, giving the fingers an elongated look.

While it has the classic components of a round diamond, the unique shape screams modern and innovative. If you’re in between a classic and modern look, this may be just the shape for you.

Triangle Diamonds

Triangular diamonds are cut in a brilliant style known as “trillion.” As the name implies, it is cut into the shape of a wedge. The corners may be edgy and pointed, or they may be more rounded and boughed out.

Not very common on their own, triangular diamonds are more often used as side stones to create a sharp, elegant look that contrasts with other shapes.

Whether you want to bedazzle your diamond with triangular side stones, or you want to stand out and use the triangle shape on its own, these diamonds are sure to sparkle and shine.

Heart-Shaped Diamonds

Romantic and sentimental, heart-shaped diamonds are a fun way to wear your heart on your finger. Depending on the ratio and the precision of the diamond cutter, heart-shapes can be wider or more elongated.

The ultimate symbol of love and romance, this is an excellent choice for an anniversary or engagement ring.

Marquise Diamonds

The historic marquis shape is making its way back into popularity. This majestic diamond is similar to an oval shape with rounded sides and points at each end.

This fierce and bold diamond is another great choice for smaller hands or short fingers, giving off an elongated look.

If you want something more dramatic and royal, you may want to take a look at the marquis-shaped diamond.

Octagonal-Shaped Diamond

The most common octagonal-shaped diamond is the emerald cut. This unique, rectangular cut has lean facets extending down the side. While it doesn’t give off much brilliance, it does give off a “hall-of-mirrors” effect.

This smooth, clean diamond is relatively large and has a somewhat “chunky” look. It definitely screams luxury. This emerald is the perfect shape if you’re all about glamour without the sparkle.

Pear-Shaped Diamonds

A hybrid between the marquis and the oval, the pear-shaped diamond is unique, modern, and glamorous all in one. The pear-shaped diamond resembles a teardrop, with a delicately rounded bottom and a sharp, pointed tip.

Depending on your personal preference, these diamonds can be chunkier or more slender. Because of their brilliant cut, they also exude a lot of shimmer and sparkle.

If you’re looking for something unique yet elegant, a pear-shaped diamond should be on your radar. Just be careful, as the points are prone to chipping. As with any of the pointed shapes, you want to ensure the diamond is properly set.

Rectangle Diamonds

Of the rectangle diamonds, the cushion cut is the most popular shape. Made with parallel sides and rounded corners, the name lends itself well to their soft, pillowy appearance. With 58 facets, this stone is known to sparkle and shine. Many consider this cut to be the vintage version of the round diamond.

The unique thing about rectangle diamonds is that they offer some of the largest tables to make smaller stones look much bigger.

If you’re a total vintage gal, the cushion might be your calling when you think about the right diamond shape for your style.
