Over the past weekend, rapper Megan Thee Stallion was shot at and reportedly taken to a hospital to be treated for a gunshot wound. Mystery clouds exactly what happened, but here is what we know so far.
On Sunday, July 12, Los Angeles police officers reportedly received a call about a disturbance outside of a Hollywood Hills residence around 4:30 a.m. Upon arrival, witnesses told officers they overheard people arguing in an SUV before shots were fired. TMZ reported that law enforcement located the SUV and found Tory Lanez, Megan Thee Stallion, and another unidentified woman in the vehicle. When police searched the SUV, they discovered a gun. Tory Lanez was arrested and charged on one felony count of carrying a concealed weapon in a vehicle.
Meg along with Tory Lanez and Kylie Jenner were at a Hollywood Hills party.
Naturally, with the lack of information, theories and rumors are spreading on social media, with some fans claiming the Jenner curse is to blame (this one is probably my favorite). One fan claimed that word on the street is Meg and Tory had a bad breakup and the shooting was a result of that.
Megan took to IG to clear the air so to speak saying the gunshot wounds were the result of someone trying to harm her but that she was okay. Here is her statement:

Tory Lanez hasn’t posted anything to social media since the incident. Kylie has, but hasn’t addressed the situation AT ALL.
UPDATE:
On Thursday, Page Six reported that the shooting was committed by Tory Lanez.
“Tory fired the shots from within the vehicle while Megan was outside trying to leave,” the source said. “There is video and the police are investigating. This is a case of a man physically harming and abusing a woman.”
TMZ reports that Tory shot Megan twice in the foot. According to the publication, witnesses are not cooperating with the police.
Now y’all know me. I’m always trying to get at the root of celebrity gossip to get some kind of takeaway to help me grow. Thankfully I ain’t have to dig too hard because Meg already laid it out in the caption of her Instagram statement.
“I hate that it took this experience for me to learn how to protect my energy.”
And this seems to be a running theme with Megan so far, as earlier this year she was involved in a bitter contract dispute with her initial label. Fans blasted her for “not knowing better” and “trying to get out of a contract”. You know typical social media arm-chair strategist type of feedback.
But the thing is, Meg is more like a lot of us than we think. In the contract dispute, it is reported her mother and manager were the ones handling everything, and she signed thinking they had her best interest at heart. I don’t know what’s really true about this shooting incident, but if Meg is saying she had to learn to protect her energy, I’m willing to bet a similar set up on Sunday took place. She was in a place with people she knew and trusted then shit just went left, fast. And she was pretty damn lucky it didn’t go as far as it sounds like it could have.
And in that moment I saw myself in Megan. I’ve been in situations where people took advantage of my trusting nature as I’m sure everyone has. There’s a reason fairy tales usually involve naïve children. Because it’s a part of growing up to learn how to spot problem folks. We have blind spots when it comes to people we know, love and trust. For some reason we take those people out of that “trust but verify” equation once we feel we know them. And we just know that no matter what, these people are going to have our backs.
But as the prophetess Teyana Taylor put it:
“It be the ones who say they ride for you, it be the ones, the ones you love, them too.”
Just because someone says they have your back; doesn’t mean they won’t succumb to the fatal flaw of human error one day. No one should ever be held in such high regard in your life that you trust them without question. Not even your spiritual teachers. Or to put it better, you shouldn’t expect people to act as you believe you would in a given situation. Everybody ain’t built like you and you have to account for that.
Now I’m not saying to walk the earth like doubting Thomas, questioning everything and everyone. You gone end up like Geralt of Rivia doing that (shameless #Witcher plug). Dark, broody and alone.
But if the people you say are your people, are really your people, you should know who they really are. You should know their weakness, flaws and humanness as well as you do their strengths and divinity. That way you can tell when an action they are taking is out of character or not. This doesn’t mean you’ll never be caught off guard, but the truth of a person’s character is in everything they do.
How do I know this?
Cause when I’m not browsing the internetz for celebrity gossip to learn from, I write stories and shit. And anyhow I write a character that does something that don’t line up with the character I’ve shown the reader, then I better have a damn good reason for it or risk getting called out by my readers for bad writing.
So before we go blaming Meg again for not being more careful or any of those things, how about we see her and the situation for what it really is. A young woman in the process of growing up without her mama, trying to make headway in an industry that isn’t a fan of people as confident in herself as she is. She’s struggling to realize who and what is for her and taking the expected bumps and bruises along the way.
Given the statement she made though, I think she’s learning her lesson and for that I applaud her.
