Tisha Campbell is one of the greatest Black comedic actresses of this generation.
Behind the scenes, her last few years have been filled with ups and downs, especially when it comes to relationships. Campbell, who spent more than 20 years with her ex-husband Duane Martin, before the two announced their split in 2018, has been very vocal about her love life and the road to finding a partner.
Tisha Campbell’s Career
The actress, who first got her big break when she was cast in the 90s sitcom Martin, has gone on to make us laugh in even more memorable roles every decade since. She’s the woman who gave us Jay Kyle on My Wife and Kids and played Jane Toussaint in the Spike Lee classic School Daze.
Going Through a Divorce
Campbell and Martin shocked the world when they announced their divorce in 2018. The two had been a staple of Black love in Hollywood for more than two decades.
In a tweet announcing their divorce, Campbell wrote, “After 27 years of being together and two amazing children, it pains me to announce that I’ve filed for divorce,” the 49-year-old wrote. “It’s an emotional time and I graciously ask for privacy for me, our children and the rest of our family. [Duane Martin] said it best to me this morning. We are family FOREVER.”
While they filed for divorce in 2018, court documents revealed they actually split much earlier in 2016.
“It’s been getting harder and harder for them for the last two years. But it just got to the breaking point recently,” a source told People at the time. “It’s one of those things where they’ve been talking about it and fighting it out and trying to come to a conscious uncoupling.”
Finding Love After Divorce
It seems that they have remained amicable and put their family first. The actress had this to say in 2018 when their divorce was finalized. “I was married for over 20 years and out of that I was blessed with two AMAZING kid. Beyond that, l’m the happiest I’ve ever been,” she shared with People.
Since ending her marriage, the actress has revealed that she’s never been on a “real date.”
“I’ve never really had a been asked on a proper date by a man to this day in my life,” Campbell started. “I always had boyfriends so I went from boyfriend to boyfriend to marriage.”
Learning to Love Herself Again
She’s taking the time to really focus on herself. “One of the things that goes through your mind is ‘Who am I outside of this person?’ I took marriage, my wifely duties…and being a mother, that was at the forefront of everything. Career came second. I had to find myself,” she shared.
She’s also been very open and honest about the things she’s doing to make herself feel good and sexy. When it comes to plastic surgery, she’s not afraid to go under the knife
She told Entertainment Tonight, ‘I recently got plastic surgery. It was a mommy makeover. I had extra skin from the baby, and a little bit of drop this here, and a little bit of drop this there, and they tightened me together.”
Though she remains open to love, right now the 56 year old is focusing on being a mom to her two sons, who heavily feature her on their TikTok and enjoying this new chapter of learning about herself.
“We should be feeling good about ourselves, you know? I’m a single mom, not ready for dating, but I just wanted to feel good for me,” she explained. “First of all, I’m an open book. Second, I just think it’s more important to know why one does it.”
