On Wednesday (Feb. 15), 58-year-old Samantha Markle (the Duchess of Sussex‘s half-sister) showed up for her defamation case against Meghan Markle in virtual court, where she contented the regal blemished her name by cooking up a “rags-to-royalty” tale.
In a Florida federal court, Samantha sued the Duchess for allegedly smearing her name during her and Prince Harry’s thunderclap interview with Oprah Winfrey back in 2021. Samantha claims that Meghan made “demonstrably false and malicious statements.”
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s biography Finding Freedom (2020) supposedly defamed her half-sister as well.
Peter Ticktin, Samantha’s attorney, argued to the court that the princess chose to slander his client and their shared father because she was caught in a lie regarding their upbringing so she used the ‘rags to riches’ narrative to cover it up.
Ticktin emphatically spoke: “Why else is she putting her sister down? Why else is she putting her father down? Why else is she denying her family who has done nothing but good to her all her life? She never had a problem with them at all.”
The lawyer says the “false narrative” Meghan put out to the public victimized her half-sister.
The Duchess’ attorney, Michael Kump, contended Meghan Markle’s sister has no grounds for a defamation lawsuit.
Kump insisted the case be dismissed after saying the allegations made by Samantha and Ticktin were “quite frankly offensive to my client.”
The princess’ lawyer spoke: “Not every perceived slight ought to be litigated and that’s true here. Plaintiff is taking issue with Meghan’s own impressions of her own childhood growing up but that’s not a proper subject matter for a court of law.”
Meghan Markle‘s half-sister, Samantha Markle, is suing for $75K in damages claiming the defamation subjugated her to “humiliation, shame, and hatred on a worldwide scale.”
