Here’s your chance to find out why Eminem didn’t attend 2003 Oscars.

The rapper’s performance of “Lose Yourself” at the 2020 ceremony downright stunned spectators.

As he did not attend the 2003 Oscars event (when the song won Best Original Song) 17 years later the Shady Records executive performed it on the Academy stage for the world.

The megastar gave an explanation for why he declined the opportunity to accept a gold statue from Barbra Streisand in a later interview.

The Detroit native admitted that he didn’t show up to 2003 event because he didn’t feel the 8 Mile single would win an award. After all, it faced fierce competition. Nominated also were “Burn It Blue” from Frida, “Father and Daughter” from The Wild Thornberrys, “The Hands That Built America” from Gangs of New York, and “I Move On” from Chicago (winner of Best Picture).

When queried about the surprise Oscars performance, Eminem remarked: “I kinda figured maybe since I didn’t get a chance to do it at the time, maybe it would be cool. Back then, I never even thought that I had a chance to win, and we had just performed ‘Lose Yourself’ on the Grammys with the Roots a couple of weeks before the Oscars, so we didn’t think it was a good idea. And also, back at that time, the younger me didn’t really feel like a show like that would understand me.”

Slim Shady went on: “But then when I found out I won, ‘That’s crazy!’ That to me shows how authentic and real that award is — when you don’t show up and you still win. That makes it very real to me.”

He continued by expressing he was “blown back” by his win and regretted missing the 2003 Oscars.

“As a youngster with the Oscars, it was like a vacuum with no idea that you could earn an Oscar for a song, and I remember being sort of perplexed about why I was even up for one,” said Mr. Mathers.
