Do you remember ‘My Brother and Me’? The first Black-led sitcom that premiered on Nickelodeon featuring Amanda Seales and Kym Whitley in the 90s? Well, award-winning filmmaker, Bobby Huntley II is reviving the series with a twist. The My Brother and Me movie trailer gives new life to a beloved classic.
For those of you who may not be familiar, ‘My Brother and Me’ was a comedic sitcom about the Parker family and their most notable siblings Alfie, Dee Dee, and their older sister Melanie. Other cast members included family friends such as Deonne and the scene-stealing Milton Berry – more commonly known as Goo.
Similar to the spin on ‘The Fresh Prince of Bel Air’ reboot, ‘Bel Air’, and themes of ‘Power’ and ‘BMF’ series on Starz, the My Brother and Me movie (MBAM) will be a gritty crime drama for adult viewers. Huntley II is taking the now grown-up Alfie, Dee Dee, Melanie, Deonne, and Goo characters into much darker waters as they struggle with real-life situations that many of today’s popular dramas showcase on network, cable, and streaming platforms. This isn’t Huntley’s first rodeo. He has established his name through a wide array of award-winning short films as well as features. He is most known for his viral fan trailers. Fan-made trailers offer a unique way to not only gain Hollywood’s attention but also garner public support for ‘Pam and Tommy: a Detroit Love Story’ (a send up of the Martin series). His most recent project was directing Todd Tucker and Kandi Burress’ The Pass, which is currently one of the top watched films on the Peacock streaming platform.
When asked why he chose ‘My Brother and Me,’ Huntley shared that is was an opportunity to try something else, but also continue his trend of almost annual adaptations.
“I wanted to challenge myself as I’ve never done a crime drama before. I’ve been doing these ‘send ups’ for over eights years now and it’s becoming somewhat of an annual thing. I want people to look forward to me doing these every year between my feature films and various projects. Have them guessing which show or movie I will tackle next and I throw them off every time,” Huntley shared.
“With My Brother and Me, I enjoyed the challenge of taking a classic children’s show like this and utilizing some of the shows actors real life elements mixed with our own creative license to develop a whole new story,” Huntley continued. “There’s several articles and fan videos asking about where many of these actors are now and what they’ve been up to. I enlisted the help of my co-writer Eddie G. to add more creative elements to the storyline and round out the cast with original characters to create the new story and universe we are building now.”
Huntley also shared that he had been in touch with the creators of the original series. “The shows creators offered very beautiful kudos to my team and cast so it’s awesome and inspiring when the people that made what you’re ’tributing’ admire our work in the way that you’ve grown up admiring theirs. Can’t ask for anything better than that.”
