Missy “Misdemeanor” Elliott has been inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame as only the third Hip-Hop artist to be inducted, and the first Hip-Hop woman, Jay-Z and Jermaine Dupri as the other Hip-Hop notables. When Missy Elliott enters the Songwriters Hall of Fame she will be joined by fellow artists such as Cat Stevens, John Prine, Dallas Austin, Tom T. Hall, and Jack Tempchin.

As Missy Elliott enters the Songwriters Hall of Fame, fans should be reminded of the incredible success she has had in her career, which started with her debut album in 1997, Supa Dupa Fly. The album featured hits like “The Rain” and “Sock It 2 Me”, and her career took off from there.

The Grammy Award winner has also written songs for artists like Aaliyah, Beyoncé, Ciara, Monica, Jazmin Sullivan and many more. Missy Elliott came up in the rap game at a time where Female rappers were always looked down upon because there was always an assumption that a male wrote their rhymes. To see someone like Elliott come in and prove she can write as well as rap is great to see.

Legendary producer Timbaland has been a part of Elliott’s career from the beginning, as they came up in the state of Virginia during childhood and started working on music together while being on Swing Mob.  Once the left the group, founded by Jodeci member, Devante, they continued working together on music, and created what would become  Missy’s debut album.

On Twitter, Elliott talked about how “grateful” she was to be inducted into the songwriters Hall of Fame alongside other artist in the 2019 class. Chair of the Songwriters Hall of Fame, Nile Rodgers talked about how proud he was to see diversity among genre and gender, which he pointed out in a press release.

Rodgers continued, “these are writers who in their time literally transformed music and helped make what’s happening today possible.”

Dallas Austin is another notable name in Hip-Hop and R&B to be recognized as this year’s honoree.  Austin has penned hits for TLC, Boyz II Men, Lionel Richie, Janet Jackson, Mariah Carey and more.

Missy Elliott enters the Songwriters Hall of Fame on June 13th at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in New York City.
