Janet Jackson dazzled the sold out crowd at Radio City Music Hall on Monday, which was the final night of her three New York City performances. The Number Ones: Up Close and Personal Tour is Janet’s sixth tour, and she still has the moves and sex appeal that keeps her audience entranced. For two hours, the audience is entertained with selected songs from her extensive catalog of number one hits. Anyone who has ever witnessed Janet perform live can testify that her show is more than just a concert, it’s an experience.
Anticipation begins to build as soon as the lights dim and the curtains bearing the logo “#1’s” part to reveal a huge wide inch screen. We spend the next few minutes viewing the videos for “The Best Things In Life Are Free” and “Rhythm Nation”. The band and backup singers take their places on set and the house lights are dimmed even further. The band begins to play and the venue roars the moment that Janet makes her appearance at the top of the stairs.
Although she is a woman of petite stature, Janet has a stage presence that is larger than life. She opened with her number one hit song Pleasure Principle and everyone in the venue was on their feet, completely mesmerized by the iconic figure. You feel the energy explode from the stage as she delivers intricate choreography with a sassy attitude. Her smash hit, Control followed and she is radiant and confident, dominating the stage with her signature strut. On stage, she sheds her shy and soft-spoken demeanor to become the captivating and legendary performer that she is.
For decades, Janet has set the precedent for live entertainment, her influence amongst the newer generation of artists is apparent. Her return to the stage was inevitable and undoubtedly gave fans exactly what they asked for and left them wanting more. The Number Ones Up Close and Personal Tour will wrap up the U.S. leg of the tour in Las Vegas, Nevada next month. To see if Janet is coming to your city, visit www.janetjackson.com.
