Technology has grown at a tremendous pace in the last few decades. With so many new options for everything from your smartphone to the way you get the internet, it can be a bit confusing, to say the least. In today’s article, we’re going to address cable internet. You’ll discover just what exactly it is, how it can benefit you, and how you can get access to it.

What is cable internet?

In the simplest definition, cable internet is internet access that is available around the clock for any device that is hooked up to a specific cable. Traditionally, homeowners could only access the internet via broadband service. This meant that your computer was hooked up to a phone cord that actually dialed out. With broadband internet access, you actually had to wait for your computer to physically connect to the internet via a phone line before you could use it. Cable internet is the upgraded version of internet access for homeowners. The cable is constantly powered so you are connected to the internet at all times. This is very much like the way cable television has been running for years. When you turn on your computer just like your television, you get the internet right away. Cable internet is much more convenient than traditional broadband internet because of its around the clock availability without the need for dialing connections.

How does cable internet work?

Before you can really determine what internet service provider is going to be the right fit for your needs, you need to understand the basics behind how cable internet work. Since the cable internet is a very complex topic, we’re going to break it down. We’re going to start with what equipment you’ll find within your home and trace it back to the internet service provider.

Inside your home

Inside your home, you’ll be given a modem from your internet service provider. There are various options for cable internet providers that you can choose from, all of which have their own specific design for a modem. If you look at the back of your modem, you’ll notice that there is a coaxial cord that comes into it. This will look like what most people refer to as a cable cord. It will have a male adapter point on the end and screw into the back of the modem box.

Outside your home

If you follow this electrical coaxial cord, you’ll notice that it likely goes underground or to the exterior of your home. Either way, it will lead you back to the outside cable internet box. Each service provider will have a different type of box that is utilized for your internet service connectivity. Some will be a small box in your yard while others may be a unit placed on the side of your home.  This exterior cable internet box has a live connection inside of it. This connection is in the form of a cable that connects with wires from the street or underground. The wires from the street are connected to the service provider’s central station for transmission. This is why ‘cable internet’ is termed with the word cable. It actually is a large cable that runs from the central station of the internet service provider to all of its customers along the line.

Benefits of cable internet access

You should have a pretty clear idea of what cable internet is and how you get access to it within your home. If you still have a broadband connection, you may be considering upgrading. Let’s talk about some of the benefits that this type of internet access has over other options.

It’s so much faster

One major advantage of cable internet is that it provides quick access to the internet at any time. You don’t have to wait for the dial-up connection to get access to the things you need. In addition, the bandwidth is much bigger so you can get access to web pages much faster than with other options.

Doesn’t tie up your phone line

When you have dial-up internet, you have to either have a whole line devoted to the internet or go without having a home phone for a while. With cable internet, you don’t have to use a phone to get access. This allows your home phone to stay available the entire time you’re online, unlike with dial-up internet service.

As you can see from above, it’s not a very complex topic to understand and it can provide you with so many benefits over other types of internet connectivity options out there.
