Going through a tough time? Read this! From drinking lemon water to unplugging your phone, there are plenty of healthy habits to help you cope.

Life is full of ups and downs. But sometimes, it seems like there are more downs than ups.

People like to say, “When life brings you lemons, make lemonade.” Unfortunately, we all know it’s not that easy.

Things tend to get better when you instill some hope and conviction in yourself. But to get through a difficult time, it’s going to take more than lemonade and sheer will.

There are some things you can do to get through the hard times. If you develop and maintain positive habits, you should be able to get through just about anything.

Check out these seven positive habits. They’ll help you power through those hard times and appreciate the good ones.

1. Drink Water With Lemon

We all know that drinking water is healthy. It keeps you hydrated, flushes out toxins, and can even improve your skin.

But have you ever had water with lemon?

It’s refreshing and, nutritionally speaking, it’s good for you.

Lemon is packed full of vitamin C, which promotes tissue growth and repair.

To put lemon in your water, simply squeeze a wedge of lemon into it. Another option is to get some lemon essential oil. Put a few drops of the oil into your water, and you’ll be good to go.

As you can see, water with lemon can give you a significant health boost. Plus, it tastes good too!

2. Be Flexible With Your Goals

Goals are continually evolving and changing.

That goal you made to run a half marathon may not have happened because you got injured. Or, your goals could have been unrealistic, and you needed more time to train.

Whatever the case may be, don’t be afraid to tweak your goals and start new ones.

Try to create a new goal, whether it’s big or small, every day.

For example, you could make it a goal to read a chapter of a book every day or to call your grandmother once a week.

Being flexible with your goals will keep you focused on the big picture. And, concentrating on your goals will help get your mind off of your present difficulties.

3. Don’t Eat Your Feelings

A lot of people tend to overeat when they’re feeling down. But, the expression “Don’t eat your feelings,” reminds us not to do that.

Instead of coping with stress by overeating, practice mindful eating. That means you should listen to what your body is trying to tell you.

Every time you feel the urge to overeat, ask yourself if you’re eating because you’re upset. If you’re eating because you’re sad or anxious, do something else, such as going on a walk or calling a friend to vent.

Of course, it’s okay to have snacks, but don’t get into the habit of grabbing one every time you have a bad day.

Listen to your body and fuel it with good, healthy foods — not sugary foods that make you feel gross.

Adopting positive eating habits will keep your mind and body healthy.

4. Declutter Every Day

Decluttering your apartment every day may seem like overkill. But, having clutter around you can affect how you feel on the inside.

Decluttering your apartment doesn’t have to be a huge undertaking. The idea is to keep after it so that it doesn’t become a giant mess.

So, every time you cook, clean up the dishes and put things away. And when you have guests over, make sure to pick up after they leave.

Living in a messy space can result in anxiety, which isn’t going to help you get through tough times.

Make an effort to pick up your small messes every day. That way, you won’t have to clean up any big, overwhelming messes. It’ll help you keep your wits about you and put an end to extra stress.

5. Break Up With Your Phone

We know you can’t completely break up with your phone, but it doesn’t hurt to take a vacation from it once in a while.

Too many people are addicted to their phones. When you get hooked on your device, it can result in feelings of self-doubt and low self-worth.

If you’re going through a challenging time, your first instinct may be to spend more time on your phone. But that’s not always the answer.

Instead of grabbing the phone whenever you’re feeling down, work on developing healthy phone habits.

One idea could be to put your phone down at a specific time each night. Or, you might limit yourself to one hour of phone time each day.

If you can stop leaning on your phone as a coping mechanism, it’ll be easier to work through hard times.

6. Consider Going to Therapy

There’s no shame in getting help. If you’re struggling, go to a therapist.

A therapist can help you understand your emotions. They offer excellent advice on how to cope with all of life’s difficulties.

They can also help you see things differently, which can improve your outlook on life.

You may have to do some therapist “shopping” to find the right fit. But once you discover a therapist who gets you, it’ll be easier to deal with any situation life throws your way.

7. Stick With a Frugal Mindset

Not everyone has good spending habits.

Some people tend to buy whatever they want, such as a shiny new bike. Before they know it, they’re in debt, which doesn’t help matters if they’re already struggling.

If you’re going through a similar situation, it’s time to change.

Money could be one of your difficulties. If that’s the case, you need to develop better financial habits.

Take baby steps and learn what it takes to be a prudent saver instead of a constant spender. It’ll help you now and in the long run!

In Conclusion

Forming positive habits takes time. Don’t be hard on yourself if some habits don’t stick right away.

But if you can develop and apply healthier habits, you’ll find that they help you get through tough times.

Applying new habits means you’ll have to reinforce them. To do that, set a new goal every day and pursue it until it becomes a habit.

If you end up making an unrealistic goal, change it up a bit. As we mentioned earlier, nothing is set in stone. If you find it hard to stick to a habit, modify it.

Whatever it takes, figure out a way to follow through. Only then will you be able to push through the hard times.

With positive habits in place, you’ll be able to make it through anything. Your self-confidence and willingness to change will take you far!
