A bunkie board, also known as box springs for a normal bed, is an accessory that supports the top bunk. This type of bed support originates from the early twentieth century and is used in bunk beds as well as many other types of furniture. It is generally made of either wood or metal and can be made to fit most standard bed frames.

Bunkie Board Styles

A Bunkie board is a flat board that is often made up of plywood or a similar type of material. There are two styles of bunkie boards.

  • The first is made of wood which can be stained and painted to match the color of the frame. It is possible to get the boards stained to mimic different textures such as oak or poplar, though this usually results in a lighter color overall since there is no need to stain the wood.
  • The second style uses metal and is available in black oxide, chrome, and a variety of colors. These use a different welding process to create the thickness of the board, so they are not as heavy as the wood versions.

Advantages Of Using Bunkie Boards

Bunkie Board Advantages

There are many advantages to using a bunkie board with your bunk beds.

  • First, it creates much less sag, allowing for much more comfort when sleeping.
  • In addition, it adds support to the bottom of the bed thereby reducing the chances of either the top or the bottom spring of the mattress collapsing in on itself.
  • It also reduces the chances of one side of the bed shifting out of place because of the pressure from the box springs. This is much less likely to happen if the board has much more support.

When selecting the size bunkie boards to use with your bed, make sure to get ones that fit the mattress snugly so that there is a little room for the springs to expand. Box springs with less than two inches of space between them will be too much of a strain for the bed. You want the board to be right at the edge of the mattress, but not so far that it can’t be pulled up by the bedding.

Bunkie boards are especially useful for platform beds because their small size prevents them from sagging when they are pushed up against the sides of the platform bed. However, they do not offer the same amount of support that box springs provide, so it is important to balance both to get the best benefits. If you are interested in using them for support in your platform bed, there are several different styles you can choose from. There are also different varieties of wood available, so you can find one that best suits your needs. Wood buddies boards are also easy to assemble, so you may find yourself simply storing it away when it is not in use.

Bunkie Board Vs Box Spring

Bunkie Board vs Box Spring

Although both types of mattresses perform well when it comes to durability, comfort, and firmness, there is a considerable difference between the two. Some consumers may prefer a softer bed frame with a softer mattress, which allows them to feel more comfortable and may be easier to sleep on. Others may prefer the sturdiness of the thicker, wooden frame to withstand the wear of kids and dogs.

A bunkie board is typically made of cedarwood or another kind of softwood that has a more pliable surface. This type of frame provides a more solid support system for the bed because it does not rely on the metal or plastic foundations that most beds do. Although this may be an attractive option for some consumers, the foundation can make a difference in how the bed feels once you have purchased it and whether or not it is a good match for your bedroom.

A box spring is often made of layers of foam and hard plastic. It has either a wood or metal frame that supports it. Although it does not rely on the strength of the foundation as much as a bunkie board, it does have its advantages. It can provide extra comfort in cooler climates because it does not rely on the same support system as the softer, wooden frame does. Because it is typically higher priced than the board, it is generally seen as the better mattress choice for hot climates.

Slats Vs Bunkie Board

When you compare Bunkie board vs. slats, you will find that there are several things to like and dislike about these two different types of bedding. Although the main difference between the Bunkie board vs. slats is the look and feel of the boards, there are still some major differences between the two that you will find interesting. Let’s take a look at some of the key differences between the two.

  • The first major difference between the Bunkie board and the slatted base is the cost. Because Bunkie board is made from a single piece of wood, it is cheaper than the slatted base, although not by much.

  • Another big difference between the two is the look and feel of the mattress. If you have always had a preference for wooden bed frames but are interested in trying out a more modern look, then you will love the new Bunkie board mattresses. These modern bed frames look just like traditional wood frame mattresses, but only one side of the mattress has a slatted base instead of the traditional wood design.

Though a comfortable base and mattress are very important for our back, it is also important that we use a properly sized blanket. The ideal weight of a blanket differs according to the size and weight of the user. Therefore choose your blankets, duvets, and comforters wisely.

Conclusion

When comparing Bunkie board vs. slats, you will also want to consider whether you want a memory foam mattress or not. The memory foam in a Bunkie board mattress provides you with what is called a “memory foam” sensation. This is the same sensation that you get from getting in bed with a great book or slipping into a comfortable sleep. Because of this, if you are interested in sleeping in a Bunkie board bed, but would prefer to not have to deal with memory foam, you might want to think about a different type of mattress.
