Ava DuVernay Makes History at Venice Film Festival

Ava DuVernay has always been one to push boundaries, now she has made history as the first African American woman to be among the selection at the Venice Film Festival.

The news of her movie making the lineup was releassed with other nominees for the 80th edition of the festival.

Ava joins four other women directors in the competition. These directors include Sofia Coppola for the movie Prisilla, Fien Torch for Holly, Agnieszecka Holland for the Green Border, Malgorzata Szumowska for Woman of.

Before Ava, Regina King was the first African American woman to play at Venice with her movie, One night in Miami.

Ava’s nominated movie is based on a book titled Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents. This highly acclaimed book by Isabel Wilkerson navigates American racism and the struggles it brings. This won’t be the first time Ava explores racial discrimination in her work, some of her most notable work include Selma and when they see us.

This is not her first time she is making history as an African American woman. Recently, she was the first African American woman to be on Ben & Jerry’s ice cream.

Ava DuVernay’s Accomplishments so far

Ava Duvernay is a filmmaker who started in 2010 but has since made many critically acclaimed movies usually centering around important issues. She is a talented and well-accomplished woman. Her most notable works include  Selma, A wrinkle in time, When they see us and Queen Sugar.

We can’t list out everything she’s good at but we can list out most of her firsts.

She was the first black woman to win the directing award in the U.S. dramatic competition at the Sundance Film Festival.

She was the first African American woman to be nominated for a Golden Globe.

She was the first African American woman nominated for An Academy award for Best documntary feature.
