Have you ever listened to a song and thought to yourself, “Wow, that beat is really good, I wish I could make something like that someday”?  You’re in luck! We’re breaking down everything you need to start producing music right from your bedroom computer. You don’t need expensive gear or years of experience, just a little creativity and the right tools to get started. By the end of this guide, you’ll have a clear roadmap to get started with music production.

Music Production 101

What Is Music Production?

Music production is the complete process of making songs, from start to finish. The main tool used in modern music production is a DAW (Digital Audio Workstation), a software that allows you to record, edit, and arrange music all in one place. Contrary to popular belief, you don’t need expensive equipment or a professional studio to start making music. A decent computer, a DAW, and working speakers/headphones are enough to begin experimenting and bringing your ideas to life.

Choosing a DAW

Before we jump right into the process of music production, what you need to do first is pick a DAW. This software is where you’ll create, arrange, and edit your music, so picking the right one is crucial. The best DAW for you depends on your goals and workflow. Here are a few key factors to consider:

– What genre do you primarily want to make? Some DAWs are better suited for electronic music (FL Studio, Ableton Live), while others excel at recording live instruments (Pro Tools, Logic Pro).

– Do you plan to record live instruments or just create digital beats? If you want to record vocals or instruments, look for a DAW with strong recording capabilities. If you’re focused on beat-making, loop-based DAWs might be a better fit.

– How user-friendly do you want your DAW to be? Some DAWs have a steep learning curve, while others are beginner-friendly with intuitive interfaces.

– What operating system are you using? Some DAWs, like Logic Pro, are Mac-exclusive, while others like FL Studio and Ableton Live work on both Windows and macOS.

As a music producer myself, I personally recommend FL Studio for beginners. FL Studio is one of (if not) the most popular DAW on the market, and for good reason too. Not only does FL Studio have a clean and easy-to-digest workflow, it is also extremely versatile for any genre you want to make, as it comes with a wide variety of built-in instruments, effects, and samples to get you started.

Before committing to the full version, FL Studio offers an unlimited free trial that lets you explore the software. The only limitation is that you can’t reopen your saved projects once you exit. This makes it a great opportunity to experiment and see if FL Studio suits your style before you purchase it.

Here’s a useful video on how to pick a DAW if you’re just starting out..

The Next Steps + Resources

Now that you’ve picked out and installed a DAW, the best thing you can do is simply learn the fundamentals of the music production process and your DAW. There are an endless amount of resources you can use to get started, here are some useful links below:

The most important thing to remember is that making music is a process, there’s no rush. Whether you’re making beats for fun or working toward your first album, keep experimenting, stay curious, and enjoy the creative process. Over time, you’ll develop your unique sound and discover new techniques to refine your skills.

Don’t be afraid to make mistakes along the way; every producer has been there. Keep learning, keep practicing, and most importantly, keep creating. The world of music production is vast, and your possibilities are endless.

Good luck, and happy producing!
