We all love to watch Superheroes. They run faster, jump higher, move mountains and sometimes have cool outfits.  But when sistas step in and fill those superhero shoes they bring a different energy; a feminine power unlike no other. Black women are known to be versatile beings, so being a part of the superhero world makes perfect sense. So we’re bringing you some of the most iconic Black female superheroes you should be familiar with.

Genius, power, and beauty are just a few ingredients that are a part of Black female superheroes like Storm, Shuri, Riri Williams, Vixen and Monica Rambeau to name a few. These Black female superheroes are a part of the culture and have won us over with sharp looks and sharp moves to match. Black female superheroes kick butt and look good doing it.

Storm

The mutant is one of the leaders of the X-Men. Her mutation is the ability to control the weather and its elements. This includes tornadoes, typhoons, thunderstorms and discharging electrical energy. Storm not only can knock out her enemy, but a whole city. In the first iteration of the X-men film, Halle Berry starred as Storm, a perfect casting!

Nubia is a member of the DC universe. She was introduced in 1973 and is DC’s first black female superhero. You will find her mostly in the comics using her super strength and Amazonian weapons.

Shuri

A fan favorite from the Black Panther films, her story is still developing. Her character is a genius inventor that helps her brother T’Challa stay ready for anything thrown his way. Shuri also plays a part in the resistance by creating strategy and solutions.

Riri Williams

Riri Williams is a superhero introduced in 2016 appealing to younger audiences. She is a teenage genius that builds her own suit of armor similar to Iron Man’s and becomes Ironheart. Riri is self-taught and uses her theoretical knowledge and technological innovation to catch the wrong doers.

Vixen

Vixen, also known as Mari McCabe, is a member of the Justice League, originally introduced in 1981. Her unique powers allow her to mimic the abilities of any animal that has ever lived on Earth. With having this versatility it comes incredibly handy with battle or survival situations.

Monica Rambeau

A lesser known member of the Marvel universe, her power is she can manipulate different energy. This allows her to physically transform herself into that energy. Kicking butt while having resilience. This powerful Photon gives those super villains a run for their money.

Thunder and Lightning

This dynamic duo are  members of the DC universe. Anissa Pierce is Thunder and Jennifer Pierce is Lightning. Anissa has superhuman strength while Jennifer manipulates and controls electricity. Daughters of Black Lightning, these sisters powers and abilities complement each other to fight for justice.

Sister Night

In Watchmen Sister Night, also known as Angela Abar, is a different kind of superhero that kicks butt. Sister Night is more of a vigilante character arc. She represents the fight we all need to have against those who try to destroy us.

Darla Dudley

From the DC Comics, Darla has superhuman strength and is a member of the Shazam family. As one of the youngest members of the family she can still hold her own against the toughest villains.

Bringing that feminine energy is one of the things that makes these women stand out. Black female superheroes with enhanced weapons, superhuman strength and abilities represent the power we all want to see in us. They provide an escape for a little while and allow us to close our eyes and play pretend. I pretend that I’m Storm creating a weather symphony. Or Sister Night making sure to get the bad guy no matter what it takes. Be it that we admire magical powers or vigilantism, black female superheroes always kick butt.
