The Jagged Edge Verzuz with 112 was one of the first battles that fans seemingly asked for. It was also one of the last battles that took place in a studio, without live performances. On the surface, it seemed like the perfect matchup, two groups from Atlanta, both of which entered the industry in the 90s. The nostalgia and the group’s association with music legends Jermaine Dupri and Puff Daddy respectively, only made for a more exciting battle. But during a recent interview with Jagged Edge, the group revealed that they actually thought the battle was a “horrible” matchup. That wasn’t all! They even talked about about who would be a better matchup. Keep reading more for the full Jagged Edge Verzuz thoughts.
“Timbaland called me, and Swizz called me on the same phone call,” Brandon Casey of Jagged Edge reminisced about how the Verzuz even came together. “They just felt like it was so important to the culture, like you can’t say no. And so we kinda let that sway us a little bit. Cause at first, we wasn’t gonna do it.”
They obviously relented and made it happen, but in large part for the fans. The group shared that it wasn’t something they were excited to do. “At the end of the day, you never can really crown a winner from something like that. 112 fans gonna say they won, Jagged Edge fans gonna say they won…”
Watch Jagged Edge talk about the impact of the Verzuz below:
Brian Casey, Brandon’s twin brother didn’t mince words. “I think that sh*t was a horrible battle bro! At the end of the day, we got a lot of slow songs people love, and then we got some fast songs people love. They a majority fast, and then they got like two slow songs all the people love. So it’s really just a horrible battle!”
“I feel like when people say us and 112 dominated our era, I don’t agree, cause I feel like 112 era is Dru Hill,” Brandon continued. “Ya’ll came out in ‘94, ‘95, we came out in ‘98! So really, you gotta say we dominated cause we don’t really have a counter part really. Nobody came out ‘98 and took their ride with us. The groups that came out that time, they long gone. They lumped us with 112 cause that’s Puffy and we Jermaine…”
Jagged Edge Share Who Would Be A Better Verzuz Matchup
While their answer certainly might surprise some, they have a point. With 11 albums under their belt, that is a feat few R&B artists get to achieve, much less groups (for context, New Edition have 8 albums, including one Christmas album).
