For actors, there is no right way to predict which movie will be a hit or which role will be a blockbuster, so some successful movie scripts end up getting rejected. 1. Lupita Nyong’o – The Woman King
Oscar Award winner, Lupita Nyong’o parted ways amicably with the production team of The Woman King. She was to play the role of an Agojie warrior named Nawi, who is the daughter of General Nanisca. A film that grossed over $76 million worldwide.
However, she declined before the filming began, stating her reasons as not being a good fit for the role. She confessed, “…it wasn’t the role for me to play.” In the end, Oscar nominee Thuso Mbedu played the character and was praised for it.
2. Tina Turner – The Color Purple
The Colour Purple made about $18 million when it came out, mainly because it had a great opening on Christmas Day. Tina Turner, who was supposed to play the main character, shockingly turned it down, then Taraji P. picked it up. Further, it went on to become the second-highest Christmas Day debut of all time.
Additionally, she attributed her past experiences with domestic abuse as her reason for rejecting the role of Shug Avery. The actress told producer Quincy Jones that she had “already lived it”.
3. Israel Adesanya – Creed III
Adesanya revealed he was supposed to play a few roles in blockbuster movies and his reasons for passing them. The athlete turned actor passed down the role, because he needed to face his fighting championship at the time. The movie went on to achieve $276 million, a major hit in 2023.
4. Eric Andre – A Real Pain
Another actor who passed on a blockbuster role was Eric André. In the hit comedy-drama movie, the actor rejected the role of Benji in 2024. Afterwards, the role was accepted by Kieran Culkin. He went on to eventually earn him an Academy Award.
The director, Eisenberg offered the role to Eric André after suggesting that he would be a good fit. He declined it stating it was “miserable” and not in his “lane.”
5. Daniel Kaluuya – W’Kabi
Daniel Kaluuya is among the actors who passed on a blockbuster role and refused to be in season 2 despite Black Panther being a hit movie. He explained he had to decline due to a scheduling conflict with Jordan Peele’s film, Nope.
