The cast of The Best Man still connects with viewers today because their stories feel real. They showed us love, friendship, pain, success, and growth all in a way many could relate to. It’s a known fact that fantastic actors who display their talents extraordinarily on screen often leave viewers in awe and form a bond with their talent. One such group of talents is the beautiful cast of The Best Man, written and directed by Malcolm D. Lee, marking his directorial debut.
The Best Man (1999) is a romantic comedy-drama centered around a group of college friends reuniting for a wedding, but secrets from the past exposed through a soon-to-be-published novel threaten to unravel friendships and love.
When this group came back together in The Best Man: The Final Chapters, it wasn’t just a reunion; it was a reminder of how far they had come, both on screen and in real life. What makes them special isn’t just how famous they became, but the legacy they built. They told stories that mattered. And even now, those stories still speak to us. And their lives after the film still span across the globe, interesting stories that fans can still look out for.
Beyond the drama and laughter, these films portray lifelong friendships, the strong emotional bonds between Black men, the beauty and tension in Black romantic relationships, and explore themes like loyalty, grief, success, and purpose. Most importantly, it moved black representation forward, showing black characters not just surviving but thriving. After the release of the sequel “The Best Man Holiday,” which came 14 years later, one question remains on the minds of many: WHERE ARE THEY NOW?
Where Are the Cast of The Best Man Now?
Taye Diggs
Harper Stewart, played by Taye Diggs, is an intelligent and ambitious writer whose debut novel caused friction within his close-knit friend group. From being an ambitious writer, his character evolves into a more visible public figure who dabbles in TV appearances, book tours and even Broadway adaptations of his work.
Outside the film, Diggs remained active on screen, most recently starring in All American (The CW) as Coach Billy Baker. Currently, he’s focusing on life as a renowned author and producer while navigating fatherhood, striving for balance between career success and being present at home.
Nia Long
The beautiful and vibrant Jordan Armstrong, played by Nia Long, is a passionate, successful TV executive who represents Black female ambition and independence. After the film, she appeared in ‘Empire,’ You People, and had a major role in ‘NCIS: Los Angeles’. She has remained consistently visible in film and TV shows.
In recent years, she expressed her desire to be more selective with roles to protect her peace and prioritize meaningful work over quantity, which explains her occasional absence from the screens. Today, Nia is known for embracing motherhood, self-growth and advocating for black women’s narratives in the media.
Sanaa Lathan
Robin Stewart played by Sanaa Lathan was the soft-spoken yet grounded love interest of Harper, representing emotional depth and the challenges of balancing love with ambition. A love interest that went beyond the screen into reality.
After the Best Man films, Sanaa continued to shine in projects like Something New, The Perfect Guy And ‘Succession’. Her versatility kept her a staple in Black cinema and beyond. In 2022, she expanded creatively, making her directorial debut with On the Come Up, a film rooted in black youth, Hip-Hop, and identity. She’s now focused on telling rich, Black-led stories both in front of and behind the camera, using her platform to extend authentic voices in film and television.
Terrance Howard
Terrance Howard‘s role in The Best man film is one of the most memorable and dynamic. His character, Quentin Spivey was charismatic, unpredictable and layered consistently to keep the viewers on their toes. He reached a major peak in his career with his role as Lucious Lyon in Empire, where he showcased his incredible range and solidified his place in television.
In 2019, Howard publicly announced his decision to retire from the industry, telling Extra TV, “Oh, I’m done with acting. I’m done pretending.” He echoed this again in December 2022 at the premiere of The Best Man: Final Chapters, saying, “This is the end for me. I don’t know if it’s the end for the rest of them.” Despite those statements, Howard continued to take on acting roles. In 2023, he starred in the action comedy film Showdown at the Grand, playing George Fuller.
