Pink Friday by Nicki Minaj plays like several diary entries written at different times in the rapper’s life. It covers a variety of subject matter from the Young Money rapper and is fashioned against a predominantly upbeat backdrop.
The Kane Beatz produced opener “I’m the Best,” commands and declares Minaj’s ferocious spit into the mic style and reminds the listener of the culture present on her mixtapes whereas the tone of “Roman’s Revenge,” is harsh, fierce, sadistic, and is one of Pink Friday’s masterpieces. Joining with Eminem, both rappers flow in their alter egos and the bar magic works with Swizz Beatz providing the beat. “Roman’s Reveng” has been rumored to be an all out blitzkrieg on rapper, Lil’ Kim.
There are multiple collabos on Pink Friday such as the pop sounding “Fly,” featuring Rihanna. It is a tale of stepping out into the unknown towards achieving goals and dreams, while the celebration of “Moment 4 Life,” feels like it could have featured on fellow Young Money cohort, Drake’s Thank Me Later, released earlier this year.
While there are exchanges between Minaj and others on the majority of the cuts, it is on the solos that Minaj takes off such as on “Here I Am,” “Save Me” and Pink Friday’s first single “Your Love.” Of the soloistic songs present on Pink Friday, two of the most personable are “Here I Am,” with its race car sound sprinkled through a sobering piano and the standout “Right Thru Me,” which complements her rhyming with R&B emotion.
Pink Friday is a decent debut from Nicki Minaj. It offers a foretaste into her range as a rapper, keeping with the black Barbie doll theme and crazy buzz that she has received. It is catchy, but falls short of being memorable alongside other projects released by female rappers in the past. It is not a disappointment, but it gives you a feeling that Minaj isn’t capable of stretching her style into something more hardcore and less top 40.
