A The Wood comedy series is scheduled to debut on Showtime, and the network has already announced its stellar cast.
According to exclusive from Deadline, the pilot, which is based on Rick Famuyiwa and Todd Boyd’s 1999 classic of the same name, will star Vince Staples (Jamal), Xavier Mills (Dame), Karen Obilom (Brielle), Melvin Gregg (Shawn), and Essence Renae (Ashley).

It will explore friendship and dating from three distinct perspectives of young Black men born and raised in Inglewood, Calif., a suburb of Los Angeles that has been quickly gentrifying. The three will have to balance fatherhood, ambition and loyalty to each other, making them question if they are growing apart or actually closer together. The pilot is said to “nod back” to the characters of the film on which the show would be based, but since it is set in present day, new complications, such as social media, are of course in play for these characters, as well as the women in their lives.
Directed by Famuyiwa, the re-imaging of the film (originally led by Jones, Taye Diggs, and Omar Epps) will seemingly bring a modern-day twist to the iconic flick. Richard T. Jones and Tamala Jones are also scheduled to reprise their roles as Slim and Tanya.
There is no word on whether or not Diggs or Epps are in place to make any appearances.
