The Golden Globes returned to television on Tuesday January 10th.  The 80th Annual award show was hosted by comedian Jerrod Carmichael, whose brand of comedy isn’t always easy to digest, but he had a successful SNL hosting gig last year, so this is the next level.  Wasn’t long into his opening monologue that they might have realized that they made a mistake.  But their 6 minutes of discomfort was social media’s gain.

Jerrod Carmichael, who was born in Winston-Salem, North Carolina and graduated high school in Kernersville, was the first Black person to host The Golden Globes.

He revealed that he was being paid $500k to host the show, but made it clear that he knew that he was only going to be hosting because he was Black.  The Hollywood Foreign Press Association puts on The Golden Globes and Jerrod noted that he was the first Black host in 80 years.

The crowd was visibly confused by the opening set and uncomfortable is the least you can say to describe the 6 minutes.

Here’s the Black Twitter reactions t0 Jerrod Carmichael Hosting The Golden Globes and his opening monologue.

Hear me out…I don’t think Jerrod Carmichael is bombing at all. I think every single joke is very much intentional. I don’t even think most of them are even meant to be funny. But he is taking a moment to say it all on one of the biggest stages.

Here’s another moment that made the audience cringe:

No, but for real. Jerrod Carmichael — RIGHT NOW — is who y’all swear Dave Chappelle still is. And it’s not even close. https://t.co/PGg7Orxnti

And the reviews weren’t all good…

“We are here in the hotel that killed Whitney Houston, so that’s … very exciting.”
