It has been three years since Ledisi released her last project, Pieces of Me, but the sultry songstress has been touring worldwide and appearing on television screens ever since. Her latest project, The Truth, serves as a natural continuum to her previous works demonstrating the behaviors of a strong, confident woman in love.
The first single off the album, “I Blame You” gives fans classic Ledisi vocals on a more upbeat track. The title of the song may give the impression that Ledisi is ready to bash the partner of a failed relationship, but rather, she adorns her new love in the song blaming him for the smile on her face and bringing her joy. The tempo of the song along with its playful lyrics and carefree delivery make this song perfect for young and mature listeners.
The title track, “The Truth” allows Ledisi’s voice to shine and demonstrates her incredible range as she effortlessly dips in and out of her falsetto. The instrumentation compliments the singers voice without overpowering it or fading into the background. A stand out voice is necessary on this track as Ledisi faces the truth that her relationship is over.
Many of the songs echo similar sentiments, a lover expressing her needs and measuring the quality of her relationship. Songs like “Anything” and “Like This” juxtapose each other in expressing dedication and frustration towards one’s relationship. Tracks like “That Good Good” and “Lose Control” introduce listeners to Ledisi’s sensual side as she demands an exceptional lover. No surprise as we see a more openly sexual side of Ledisi on the album. She’s showing cleavage and letting her hair down big time.
If you’ve been a fan of Ledisi since the beginning you will find yourself right at home. If you are a new listened, you will be pleased with the quality of lyrics and the overall groove of the music.
