Growing up in Sacramento,  California, Victoria Monét started writing her own songs at a very young age. She comes from a musical family, so one might say that she was born to be a singer. Monét admits that it was a natural fit for her and she’s been singing and dancing for as long as she can remember; getting her start in the church.

She’s come a long way, now signed to Atlantic Records.  October 2014 was a big month for her as she was featured on two tracks on T.I.’s Paperwork album.  She also made her iTunes debut with her own release, Nightmares & Lullabies Act I.

She is clearly more than just another female singer that will be here today and gone tomorrow, Victoria Monét has all the makings of the real deal.  We caught up with her for the full story, before the breakthrough.

Victoria Monét began performing with a local Hip-Hop group that went by the name of Boogie Monsters and got some dance lessons from members of the Jabbawockeez. Dancing is where she finds her passion and singing and writing have just fallen into place in her life. She’s written songs or collaborated with some pretty heavy hitters, including Ariana Grande, Kendrick Lamar, T.I., Diddy, Nas, and Chris Brown.  Now she’s ready to take center stage and step out from behind the pen and paper.

When asked why now, Monét responded, “It was always supposed to be now. Sometimes it’s just timing, but things always have a way of coming back around. I’ve always pursued this, but now it’s lining up with other stuff I’m doing and I’m excited about this new chapter.”

With so many voices out there on the airways now, Monét feels that she has a different style for listeners. “Growing up in Sacramento offered me a different culture and diversity with music. I got a taste of everything because my mom listened to all types of music. I’m bringing a different recipe to the music game,” she explains. Speaking of her mom, Victoria Monét says musically her mom is one of her biggest inspirations. Also her boyfriend/producer Tommy Brown (TB) who both inspires and motivates her.

The couple has been together for four years navigating through love and the music business. Victoria Monét shares that working together and living together helps their creativity and drives the passion in their music. “The music is just as real as our relationship. We’re a real team and even share the same birthday,” Monét reveals.

“Made in China,” her single is a metaphor of sorts. Monét says the take away in the song is that love is one of kind, like fine China. Her album, Nightmares & Lullabies is being released in phases because she didn’t want to oversaturate the market. Act I went out Oct. 30, Act II is scheduled for Nov. 18 and the full album will drop Dec. 9 with a visual.  Act I is currently available on iTunes.

Victoria Monét has a lot of irons in the fire and is busy getting more music out for her fans, but she has big dreams of working with Kanye West one day. She admires his creativity, uniqueness, how hands on he is with his own music and his creative control.

She appreciates all the feedback on her single “Made In China” ft. Ty Dolla $ign that she has gotten thus far and hopes it continues. She’s active on all her social media accounts and encourages her fans to reach out to her. Talk with Victoria Monét at @VICTORIAMONET_
