Emily King might not be a household name now, but that might not be for much longer. The already seasoned and Grammy nominated artist has even gotten to tour the world with the likes of Chaka Khan, Erykah Badu,  Alicia Keys,  John Legend,  Maroon 5 and Nas to name a few. Now with her sophomore project, The Switch, Emily is sure to attract even more attention and accolades.

Signing her first record deal with J Records in 2004, it wasn’t until 2007 that her debut album, East Side Story, was released, which earned a Grammy nomination for Best Contemporary R&B Album of the Year. Upon departing from J Records in 2008, she continued to work on her music and released  The Seven in 2011. That project, produced an amazing song, “Radio” that has been covered by many aspiring singers, just see for yourself on YouTube. (And you can’t miss the video of her singing that song with India Arie!)

Releasing this project independently on her very own label, Making Music Records, Emily’s roots in pop, soul and indie sounds are clearly evident on The Switch. The 11 tracks are laced with solid and pure vocals throughout.

Her voice is so soulful and powerful, it’s almost hard to believe that it’s coming from a 29 year old from New York City. Her lyrical content exudes the feelings of everything that relationships and love is about, the good, the bad and the ugly.

My favorite on The Switch is a song called “Already There”, a song about finding that place of “peace” (figuratively or physically). “Distance” is another one that I like, with a smooth and mellow vibe.  The lyrics in the song that GOT me:

Home alone or out to tea
Look to your heart and think of me
I wanna love you don’t wanna try
To change the pace of your life

“Believer” is an upbeat song that has Prince infused influences to me that I really liked as well. There is also the 1:21 “AYA”, a hauntingly beautiful chant-like interlude that consists of amazingly layered harmonies and accompanied with only an acoustic guitar.

It is obvious Emily King is an amazingly talented singer, songwriter & musician that exudes a passion for music that is refreshing and genuine. Ms. King is definitely one to watch for.
