The new comedy, Daddy’s Home, hitting theaters this weekend stars Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg as dads competing for the love of their family—which happens to be the same family.  Many obstacles are thrown their way as they fight each other off while dealing with the happenstance of life. Read more for the Daddy’s Home movie review.

Will Ferrell plays Brad, a new husband and step dad to two children. When he finds out that his wife’s ex and the children’s father is coming into town his ego gets to him and he feels the need to go out of his way to prove he is a great dad. Part of it is simply wanting to be accepted by the children as their father. Mark Wahlberg plays the birth father, Dusty and he comes in with intentions to reclaim his role as the man of the house and the father to the kids. Dusty is a free spirit athletic type, the complete opposite of Brad. All the testosterone leads to a bit of an unfriendly competition.

The film surely has some truly hilarious moments, some even unexpected. Mark does an amazing job at playing his role in a comedy, usually not his forté but he delivers where it’s necessary. Although the children are a big part of the film this isn’t a children’s movie, so expect adult humor. I’m not even sure I would bring young folks under the age of 14 to the theater for this despite the PG rating.

The interesting thing about the film to me was the character Ferrell plays. It’s almost identical to his role in his last movie, Get Hard. Wasn’t expecting him to play the same type of character so soon. Wahlberg helps keep him on his toes comedically however. Without Kevin Hart opposite him Ferrell has to be on top of his game to keep the laughs coming and he does. Appearances by Hannibal Buress offer some other highlights as well.

If you’re looking for a great laugh in the coming weeks Daddy’s Home is likely your best bet in the theaters.
