Brother of Stacy Lattisaw Denies Colorism Being A Factor In Stacy & Johnny’s Breakup

Though positive reviews still surround BET’s The New Edition Story, there happens to be one person, in particular, who didn’t have many positive things to say about the acclaimed New Edition biopic at all. According to TheJasmineBrand.com, the brother of songstress Stacy Lattisaw, Jerry Lattisaw, is upset at how his sister was ‘portrayed’ throughout scenes of the three-part miniseries.

Known for her popular hit songs, “Love On A Two-Way Street” and “Let Me Be Your Angel”, Stacy Lattisaw became an 80s phenomenon. Along with her hits, came a collaboration album, Perfect Combination, and an R&B duet, “Where Do We Go From Here”, with New Edition member Johnny Gill. However, aside from the music, the two also carried a romantic relationship.

Though the union was not detailed in The New Edition Story, Lattisaw’s name was definitely mentioned quite a few times throughout the docudrama. In a scene from part two, Johnny’s character–portrayed by singer Luke James, was in the studio with his group member, Ralph Tresvant, when he revealed that he and Stacy had broken up. He referenced that his skin color may have been a factor in the breakup and the reason behind Stacy’s family disliking and disapproval of the relationship.

“When I was with Stacy, all I did was lay up under her.” He says. Ralph then teases him, implying that he thought the couple would last forever. “Don’t get me started; I don’t even know. Her mama just thought I was bad for her career. But, I already know what that was about.”

Apparently, Stacy’s brother, Jerry, was bothered by the comments made, and he has decided to speak out. See his statement below:

“My mom don’t care about what color Johnny Gill is!!! If it wasn’t for her, he wouldn’t be in New Edition period!!! She basically got him his first record deal …. by the way, Stacy husband is brownskin too!!! How they gon’ put my motha out there like that! JG u still my brother tho!”

While there is no word from Johnny, Stacy did take to Twitter to answer whether or not Johnny’s claims were true. Here’s what she had to say…
