Jussie Smollett is in psych ward at Cook County Jail, according to his brother, Jocqui Smollett. Jocqui Smollett went on Jussie’s Instagram page to give fans an update and encouraged them to post with #freejussie advocating for his brother’s innocence. CNN reported that  Jussie Smollett was sentenced Thursday to 30 months of felony probation, including 150 days in jail, and ordered to pay restitution of more than $120,000 and a $25,000 fine for making false reports to police that he was the victim of a hate crime in January 2019.

According to HuffPost, Jocqui Smollett said, “So Jussie is currently in a psych ward at the Cook County Jail. What’s very concerning is that there was a note attached to his paperwork today saying that he’s at risk of self-harm…“I want to make it clear that he is in no way, shape, or form at risk of self-harm,” Smollett emphasized. “He wants to let folks know that he is very stable, he is very strong, he is very healthy and ready to take on the challenge that has been put up against him.”

I went on Smollett’s Instagram account to watch the video, where he is adamant about his brother’s innocence and asking fans to post #freejussie on social media to bring attention to the situation.

“We need our people, the people who support us to continue checking folks and making sure that false information does not go unchecked. So on top of that, if folks could really continue reposting things… there’s been a post from my page, Jake’s page, Jurnee’s page and from Jazz’s page, from journey’s page, all around #freejussie. If you could repost that, repost similar images, make your own image. Always just include #freejussie and we think it’s best if you tag Cook County Jail along with it. We’re really just trying to get as much engagement and attention on this injustice as much as possible… We need folks’ support in getting our brother out of jail. He never should’ve been in jail. He was attacked. he’s innocent. He’s innocent and even if you don’t believe in his innocence, you should believe that he should be free. He cannot be in jail under any circumstances.”

Some people have been posting #freejussie on their pages, including Taraji P Henson. Henson posted #freejussie on her Instagram page advocating for Jussie’s innocence and compared his situation to Emmett Till’s murder case.

An old video from The Real resurfaced, where Amanda Seales advocated for Jussie Smollet’s innocence around the time the case first started. Seales also mentioned Emmett Till’s murder and commended Smollett if it’s true that he did stage a hate crime.

We’ll have more updates as the story unfolds.
