[FIRST LOOK] Sanaa Lathan Makes Film Directorial Debut With ‘On The Come Up’ Movie

Emmy-nominated actress and New York Times best-selling novelist Sanaa Lathan makes her full length feature film directorial debut with the On The Come Up movie. The film is set to premiere at Toronto’s International Film Festival next month. It premieres on Paramount+ on September 23rd.

The upcoming Paramount+ film, On The Come Up, released its official trailer and key art on Sunday. The full trailer premiered during the MTV VMA’s broadcast.

The film is based on the New York Times’ number one best-selling novel by Angie Thomas.  Angie turned her love for writing into a career in literature. She also wrote the book turned hit movie, ‘The Hate U Give’ and holds a BFA in creative writing from Belhaven University in Jackson, Mississippi.

On The Come Up movie synopsis

The movie stars Jamila C. Gray, a movie newcomer, and follows the journey of her character. A 16 year old gifted rapper named Bri. Bri attempts to take the rap scene by storm in order to uplift her family and do right by her deceased father. However, when her first hit song goes viral for the wrong reasons, she is hit with two paths . Bri has to decide; does she stick with the authenticity that had gotten her where she is thus far or go along with the false persona that the industry is set to impose upon her. Sanaa Lathan stars in the film as her mother and Method Man also has a lead role.

The coming of age movie also stars Da’Vine Joy Randolph. Mike Epps, Miles Gutierrez-Riley, Lil Yachty, Justin Martin, Titus Makin, Michael Cooper Jr., and so many more.

On The Come Up is the first movie  directed by Sanaa Lathan; who is the next black actress to transition from the big screen to the directorial seat. Regina King recently led by making her directorial debut with hit movie, One Night in Miami, in 2020.
