Hip-hop legend Missy Elliott is the gallant receiver of not one but two doctorate degrees. On Saturday, at Norfolk State University the “Pass That Dutch” singer delivered a heartfelt commencement speech at the graduation ceremony and later was handed an honorary doctorate along with the Presidential Commencement Medallion.
Norfolk State tweeted that the music icon also donated $20,000 to the University’s “Areas of Greatest Need” fund. Missy posed vibrantly in front of 400+ graduates with a check made out to the NSU Foundation Inc. Dr. Elliot spoke: “I am proud of y’all, and y’all should be proud of [yourselves]. Now, I want y’all to look at each other and say, ‘You already won.’ Let ’em know. There ain’t no winning. You already won. Y’all could have been doing anything else these last few years. Y’all could have been wilding out, but y’all decided to finish the course, and that’s major.”
Missy Elliott collected her first doctorate in 2019 from Berkley University. That same year, Justin Timberlake and other notable public figures received their doctorate from the university for their sway on music culture and musical accolades. Dr. Elliot also addressed Norfolk State in an Instagram post: “To the Class Of 2022, May your Journey be Successful/ Fearless/ Determined to be the BEST! Behold The Green & Gold!!!!”
“I’m looking around and I see innovators, visionaries, leaders created in here. I want to see these same faces years from now saying … ’I became famous, I became president, I became a lawyer.’ All of those things,” spoke Missy in her commencement speech on Dec. 10. Her Norfolk State doctorate aimed to celebrate her “outstanding professional achievements and extraordinary contributions to public service.”
