Wu-Tang Clan rapper Raekwon’s cannabis lounge has been rejected, but why?

According to reports, a proposed smoking lounge and cannabis dispensary in Brick City (another name for Newark, New Jersey) collided with a brick wall.

Raekwon, a well-known member of the Wu-Tang Clan, is one of the founders of Hashstoria, which filed the necessary papers to open a new facility at 799–805 Broad Street earlier this year. There are now three locations for the business in Oregon.

Accordant to Jersey Digs, the city’s Landmarks and Historic Protection Commission earlier authorized Hashstoria’s application to renovate the building’s exterior facade, which is situated in the Four Corners historic district.

However, the Newark Central Planning Board rejected Hashstoria’s application on Monday, with one board member claiming that an artist rendering included in the package was objectionable.

The plan was also opposed by clergy and members of the Old First Presbyterian Church, the oldest church in Newark, according to NJ.com.

The depiction shows a woman smoking a blunt and a man holding a bottle of alcohol.

The work would have included applying new tile cladding to the building facade’s existing plywood area, painting the storefront frame black, and adding glass film to filter or conceal the view of the internal space, per the drawings that were presented to the city. April was the projected completion month.

Between 30 and 35 people would be employed. The hours would be Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to midnight and Friday through Sunday from 8 a.m. to 2 a.m.

The New Jersey Cannabis Regulation Commission, which oversees marijuana legislation in the state, presented a list of proposed regulations for marijuana lounges, sometimes referred to as “consumption spaces,” earlier this year. The legal drinking age in the state is 21 years old, thus all customers must be at least that old.
