Lifetime just released their new biopic, Giving Hope: The Ni’Cola Mitchell Story. But just how accurate is the story? We take a dive into the true events of the life of Ni’Cola Mitchell, and how she came to build the Girls Who Brunch Tour. Here’s the real Ni’Cola Mitchell story.
Although the Lifetime movie, favored most of the emotions, obstacles and support that Ni’Cola found throughout creating Girls Who Brunch Tour. It still did not show all of the abuse and frustration behind becoming a successful leader to the girls’ in her community.
Before Dr. Ni’Cola became the success that she is today, she was just a little girl from Jamaica who didn’t grow up in the best home environment. Nor did she have the best teachers pushing her to become a better version of herself. Like many of us, she was a little girl who was bullied and wanted nothing more than to stand up for herself so that she could recognize her worth.
The Real Ni’Cola Mitchell Story
At the age of fourteen, she was raped four times. In the film, they imply that she was only violated once. Being abused that young so many times takes a toll on your mental health. In fact, she began choosing the wrong men. By the time Ni’Cola turned nineteen she was pregnant with her first child, Destani.
The movie shows the frustration of her mother and the concern she has as to how Ni’Cola is going to be able to take care of a child when she’s just a child herself. But Ni’Cola is determined to prove to her mother, and herself, that she is more than capable of caring for her daughter.
In between the time that she had Destani and her second daughter Diamond, she was married. Now, we do not know all of the details as to when she was married and for how long, but she does reveal that throughout her marriage she was physically abused. For a young woman, to have gone through life being abused, violated and her life stripped apart, there’s no wonder as to why she decided to give others hope.
Throughout the film, you will see the emotions and frustrations of finding funding for Girls Who Brunch Tour. Its mentioned that her sister, NeNe, and her daughter, Diamond, both helped with her very first event in Charleston. But there were other members of her family, such as her aunt and cousin, that helped contribute to her first event as well.
After several events of Girls Who Brunch Tour, Ni’Cola was diagnosed with cancer. She initially had surgery because it was discovered that she had stage 3 cancer. The doctor then decided to proceed with an hysterectomy immediately. During the time of her radiation treatment, which lasted for 2 years (film states it lasted for one year), she was receiving help from her family and friends with the Girls Who Brunch Tour.
Ni’Cola Mitchell, is a survivor, a leader and an outstanding woman. Although the movie highlighted mostly the start of Girls Who Brunch Tour, you still felt the blood, sweat and tears that Ni’Cola placed in building a safe space for her “babies”.
There weren’t many changes that the film missed but Ni’Cola’s story goes deeper than even we can expand on.
This incredible Lifetime movie, does an outstanding job placing the majority of the events in this biopic. If you haven’t tuned in already, don’t forget to check out the amazing film on Lifetime.
