Nat Geo and Disney+ have revealed the official release date for Genius: MLK/X, which will focus on iconic civil rights leaders Malcolm X and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
A first-look teaser for the forthcoming project Genius: MLK/X gives us a behind-the-scenes peek at the movie, which stars Aaron Pierre (The Underground Railroad) and Kelvin Harrison Jr. (The Trial of the Chicago 7) as the nominal MLK and Malcolm X.
Regarding the two figures, some of the story states: “They had the same objectives, they had the same goals. Their approach is just a little different.”
Genius: MLK/X chronicles the life experiences of both King and X, from their early years, when they were molded by strong-willed fathers and horrific injustices, to their fascinating, parallel journeys as they developed into the change agents they aspired to see in the world.
Different upbringings and experiences had an impact on them as children: Malcolm Little (X) was raised in an environment of persistent, deadly violence from the KKK and ended up serving roughly a decade in prison prior to becoming a star orator with the Nation of Islam, while Martin Jr. was raised in the South during the Jim Crow era and spent his early years in the church before discovering his prolific voice in college.
‘Genius: MLK/X’ is Coming Soon
In the end, the two visionaries became influential figures in a revolution.
Additionally, Jayme Lawson (The Batman) will portray Malcolm X’s wife, Betty Shabazz, and Weruche Opia (Sliced) will portray Coretta Scott King, the bride of MLK.
Directing Genius: MLK/X‘s premiere episode will be Miss Juneteenth‘s Channing Godfrey Peoples, who will also co-executive produce with Gina Prince-Bythewood and Reggie Rock Bythewood.
Disney+’s Genius: MLK/X will debut on February 1, 2024.
