Black-owned fragrance brand CHEMIN has launched an affordable luxury collection with department store giant JC Penney. The collection offers a selection of gender-neutral perfumes and body products that “celebrate your unique essence.”

Founded by Atlanta-based perfumer, November Nichols, CHEMIN was launched back in 2017 and has since established itself as a go-to brand for fine fragrances, hand-poured soy candles, body products, and handcrafted teas. CHEMIN’s collection with JC Penney reflects this, as it includes fragrances, crystal-infused body oils, body butters, Vitamin E sugar scrubs, charcoal scrubs, and lotions. The fragrances (Eau De Toilette) include: Parfum 1 (Lemongrass, White Tea, Sandalwood), Parfum 17 (Bamboo, Citrus, Vetiver), Parfum 37 (Jasmine, Pomelo, Oud), Parfum 77 (Santal et Vanille), and Parfum 87 (Leather, Oud, Tobacco).

“I am very proud of our new partnership with JC Penney,” said November Nichols, who is one of the only black women/brands in the fragrance industry with CHEMIN. “As an indie fragrance house founded, owned and operated by a black woman, this is obviously a huge deal — as this is the first time a major retailer has gotten behind a black owned fragrance brand in this way.”

Thus far, CHEMIN is the only black brand with their own fragrance house (in the world). Not only does the brand provide great fragrances and other items, but it also provides custom fragrances and sensory experiences for individuals, groups and organizations. November Nichols herself trains artisans as many of them do not have fragrance industry knowledge from regulations to guidelines and rules. As such, she creates activations where people create their own fragrance by consulting with master artisans and craft scents inspired by themselves. Nichols is also seeking more people of color and women to break into the fragrance industry, with a WHITE LABEL program that helps people craft their own fragrances.

“Our demand for perfume is strong, but those who want to go from consumer to creator face a challenging path due to a lack of access to education (traditional perfumers typically study in France), capital and mentorship,” she said. “Although nearly 74 percent of all perfumers are white, I’m looking to change that.”

CHEMIN’s collection with JC Penney is currently available at 50 store locations across Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Louisiana, Maryland, North Carolina, New Jersey, Nevada, New York, Texas, and Utah. It’s also currently available for purchase online here.
