Becoming A Personal Trainer

For plenty of people out there staying fit and healthy is important to them, and something they actively work on. Then there are those who take personal health and fitness very seriously, and don’t just want it for themselves but want to help others achieve it. For those with a real passion for personal wellness, it can make sense to translate that interest into a career that both challenges you and leaves you feeling satisfied.

The job of a personal trainer is ideal for those who have that desire to help others achieve their fitness goals, have the kind of communication skills necessary to succeed, and are willing to put in the hard work to get qualified and then build a list of clients. If you’ve been thinking about becoming a personal trainer, here are some important things to be aware of, as well as a look at how to start a career as a personal trainer.

What Your Job Will Entail

Sometimes it’s wise to start with a job description so that you get a true sense of what a personal trainer is expected to do. At the core of the job, it is up to you to educate and then motivate your clients on all things fitness related. You will need to assess your client’s current physical fitness level, discuss their goals, and then put together a personalised plan that will allow them to achieve those goals.

Some of the most common goals that people have are improving their flexibility, strength, losing weight, and even improving their heart and cardiovascular health. They may have made the decision themselves to visit a personal trainer, or it may be on the advice of their doctor.

It’s important to understand that each client will be unique, so there isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach to training.

Excellent Communication Skills are a Must

Now as you can imagine a large part of your job will be listening to and instructing your clients. What this means is that you need to have excellent communication skills, be able to build a natural and friendly rapport with clients, and be able to set their minds at ease when it comes to any worries or hesitation about working out.

You need to be professional at all times, patient, and honest with your clients. Remember, they are trusting you for your knowledge, help, and instruction, and believe that you can help them reach their goals.

You Need to Be Able to Motivate Others

One big aspect of your job will be motivating others to get moving, push themselves, and really achieve their ultimate goals. You won’t just be coaching clients on how to perform specific exercises and leading them through the motions, you’ll need to also be their cheering squad and give them the confidence they need to be successful.

Being Good at Working Out Isn’t Enough

Sometimes people make the assumption if they are great at working out, and are in great physical shape themselves, then that’s all it takes to be a personal trainer. This couldn’t be further from the truth.

In order to start a career as a personal trainer it’s important you enrol in personal training courses such as this one in Sheffield so that you can get certified and broaden your career and salary options. There are different levels of fitness instructing and personal training available, so it’s important you give thought to what kind of career you want, and what kind of clients you want to be working with. Typically the further you go with your training and education, the more money you can potentially make down the road since you can charge more for your services.

It Can Be a Slow Start

Even if you have all the right personality traits, take your education as far as you possibly can, and have the desire and motivation to succeed in your career, it can still be a slow start. Keep in mind most people don’t just land in their dream job right away. It’s going to take work, and it’s not unusual to have to start at the bottom.

If you plan on going into business for yourself as an independent trainer, then you also need to think about how to market your business, how to find clients, and really grow your name in the industry.

A job as a personal trainer is really a dream come true for those who love to stay healthy and fit and want to share their passion and knowledge with others.
