Hair Oils

There’s no doubt that essential oils can do wonders for your hair, but there are always questions. What are the best hair oils for your hair type? How can I tame oily hair with essential oils? Is tea tree oil good for hair? Get ready for all the answers, and to learn how essential oils can help you say goodbye to hair problems, and hello to new luminous locks.

Matching the right oil with your hair type

Whilst it’s not an exact science, and many different oils can work well with different hair types, here are three great oils for frizzy, dry and all-hair types:

  • Frizzy hair: The fatty acids and vitamin E in argan oil are great at taming dry, frizzy hair. In the process of cutting down the frizz, it’ll also help soften your hair and make it shiny again.
  • Damaged hair: When your hair is in need of TLC as a result of becoming extremely dry or damaged, the richness of macadamia oil can give it a revitalizing boost.
  • All-hair types: If you’re looking for a good all rounder, coconut oil is perfect. It’s packed full of vitamins and minerals, protecting against breakage, keeping your scalp healthy and making hair strands stronger.

The hair benefits of popular essential oils

Now it’s time to look even more closely at some of the key benefits of a number of the most popular essential oils:

  • Peppermint oil: You may be more familiar with peppermint being used in toothpaste to keep your teeth healthy, but it can give your hair a boost too. For example, if you struggle with oily hair, peppermint can help rebalance oil production and reduce the greasiness.

Try a combination of a couple of drops of oil with shampoo. Some hair oils can’t be used neat, so make sure you add it to a carrier.

  • Almond oil: It may be light, but almond oil does a strong job when it comes to providing relief from an irritated scalp.

Massage a little into your scalp when you wash your hair and you’ll soon be feeling the soothing benefits.

  • Tea tree oil: Staying with irritation, let’s move onto dandruff and using tea tree oil for hair. Its anti-fungal properties make it an ideal flake fighter.

Simply mix a few drops in some conditioner and smooth it over your hair. Leave for 10 minutes and then rinse out. If you want a really deep treatment, you could wrap up your hair and leave it on overnight.

  • Lavender: There are a number of essential oils that work really well at preventing breakage and stimulating hair growth, and one of the best at doing so is lavender.

You can either dilute lavender oil with a carrier oil and massage directly onto your scalp or add a couple of drops to your favorite shampoo or conditioner. As with any essential hair oil go carefully though – you’ll never need more than five drops.
