Not the Verzuz we thought was coming next out the South, but both these legendary groups do deserve their flowers. The latest Verzuz pits UGK vs 8Ball and MJG, putting Port Arthur, Texas, against Orange Mound, Memphis, Tennessee. (We were kinda hoping for UGK vs OutKast or UGk vs the Geto Boys).
UGK is comprised of Bun B and Pimp C. Pimp C passed away tragically before his time back in December 2007. Bun B was held it down with solo albums since his passing, helping keep the UGK legacy alive. Pimp C’s death was verified as accidental, with the coroner attributing it to the effects of Pimp’s heavy usage of “purple drank”, a combination of codeine and promethazine, in conjunction with his pre-existing condition of sleep apnea.
UGK released 6 albums from 1992 to 2009. For a large part of their career they were definitely Underground Kingz, but after collaborating with Jay-Z on “Big Pimpin’,” the group found mainstream success. Their Underground Kingz album in 2007 went number 1 on the Billboard charts, just months after Pimp C was released from prison.
8Ball & MJG released 8 albums from 1993 to 2010. They have also released several individual projects as well.
