Jason Derülo Interview, Talks Winning BMI Songwriter of the Year
Last year he tore the summer up with hit after hit coveting three multi-platinum singles and now Jason Derülo is back. The newly crowned BMI songwriter of the year at their 59th Pop Music Awards is back and ready to take on this year with what he calls his best creation to date. I had a chance to sit with the passionate singer and find out about what drives his music and his new single “Don’t Want to Go Home”.
Parlé Magazine: So jumping right into it, last year you burst into the music scene dominating the pop charts, but how long have you been in music?
Jason Derülo: Um, I think I was four or five years old when I knew I wanted to be an artist. I saw Michael Jackson for the first time and I remember telling my mom ‘I want to be just like him’ (laughs) and I fell in love with music and loved it more and more every day. I was about 13 when I wrote my first song and never looked back.
Parlé: Being so interested in music must have played a big part in your child hood then?
Jason Derülo: Yeah, yeah it was. Not really in the household but I’ve always went to performing arts schools. Growing up I always just wanted to be in and around music and entertainment so school was my life.
Parlé: Sounds like a fun life to me, growing up studying & learning so much about music must have taken a lot of passion & dedication, would you say that passion is what drives you to keep making music?
Jason Derülo: You know, with me and music, man it’s just different. It’s my favorite thing to do. Like, I’ll go to the studio and get excited just to go in the booth. I always get excited just to hear what’s going to come out because the beginning is always different than the end. I’m also always inspired by life and everything around, there’s always something to write about and that keeps me wanting to do it.
Parlé: You mentioned that life influences your music and from that most can gather that you have a pretty upbeat spirit but what would you classify your style of music as? What Genre are you apart of?
Jason Derülo: I’d have to say my style is ever changing. On this journey of life and journey as a man I continue to experience things and grow and as things change around me, my music changes. In school I studied all different kinds of music as well from Jazz to Classical and Hip-Hop and these all have influenced me as well so I consider my style just music.
Parlé: And how would you say that your journey influenced your new single?Jason Derülo: So I wrote my first album when I was 19, now I’m 21. In that time between I’ve seen so much stuff and traveled all over the world and been to so many clubs and I wanted to reflect all the stuff I’ve done. So this is my first club record because it was one of my first time’s being in the club. I also wanted to write a song that was a feel good record. You know, a record that you can throw on if you were having a troubled day and you can just forget about what’s going on at home, hence the title “Don’t Want To Go Home.”
Parlé: Can we expect more party jumpers on the new album then?
Jason Derülo: Yeah, you can expect more like that track and you can also expect a totally different side, a much more emotional. I got to a very vulnerable state on this album so it’s not just upbeat; there are so many dimensions to this album.
Parlé: Last year you were met with so much success and popularity not to mention you left a lasting impression on your newfound fans, how do you think this album will compare.
Jason Derülo: Hmmm I definitely feel like it’s the greatest accomplishment of my life, and I can say that wholeheartedly. In terms of sales, I don’t really look at stuff like that. I’m not really into the status of things because that’s not why I make the music, I just hope that what I create people really enjoy it and accept it. You know.
Parlé: Now that you mention your fans I understand that you’re now creating webisodes for them? Can you tell us more about that?
Jason Derülo: Well, leading up to my album I wanted to share the inside of things with them, something a little personal from me. Years ago the social networks weren’t as big as they are now and 10 years ago they didn’t exist so I wanted to tap into that and allow my fans to experience everything as close as possible and know what’s going on.
Parlé: Sounds like your very passionate about your fans.
Jason Derülo: Most definitely. 100%
