Over the past decades, Hollywood has opened its doors to such multifaceted narratives, and as a result, African American storytellers have had the chance to share their projects with the world.

All American

This film follows a gifted teen football player named Spencer James (Daniel Ezra) from Crenshaw, California. His world is flipped upside down after a coach from Beverly Hills encourages him to leave Crenshaw and play on his team. To pull it off, James moves in with the coach and his affluent family. Concrete Cowboy

Believe it or not, there were authentic African American cowboys in North Philadelphia back in the day, and “Concrete Cowboy” shares the tale. Sefer, a bright-eyed teenager, is sent to reside with his father for the summer. While he’s there, he links up with a pack of city cowboys who ultimately send his life down a rampageous path. When They See Us

Two decades after five African American kids were unjustly convicted when a female jogger in Central Park was raped, “When They See Us” inspects the Exonerated Five story. The limited series exhibits how racism sways the criminal justice system and is able to keep innocent people locked up for decades. She’s Gotta Have It

Spike Lee’s film She’s Gotta Have It inspired this television series. DeWanda Wise stars in this refashioned version as Lola Darling, an artistic Brooklyn native who’s searching for love. All Day and a Night
