HBO Picks Up Two New Series From ‘Insecure’ Creator Issa Rae
This is certainly the season of wins for polished actress, writer, producer, and director Ms. Issa Rae. The Insecure phenomenon and creator is said to have two new series that are in development for HBO… and, no, this is not a drill!
In early 2016, Rae inked a two-year first-look producing deal with the premier network, and things have only seemed to go up from there. With the outstanding success of season one and two of her critically acclaimed comedy series, Insecure, it has definitely been a beneficial partnership for both Rae and the HBO family. Rae has greatly contributed to the network, and it doesn’t look like she’ll be stopping anytime soon!
Though fans were raving in anticipation for a season three of Insecure, the gag is… they’ll actually get that and then some. A source told Deadline that HBO has picked up comedy and drama series Him or Her and Sweet Life from the Golden Globe-nominated creative, and both projects are set to break a few barriers within the black community.
In cohorts with Emmy-winner and ex-writer of the Daily Show, Travon Free, Rae will serve as the executive producer of Him or Her, a thirty-minute comedy, capturing the dating life of a millennial bisexual black man and the crazy relationships and everyday life shenanigans that he finds himself in. Deniese Davis, Rae’s ColorCreative.TV partner, will also executive produce, along with Free penning the series.
Sweet Life will be taking place in the community of Windsor Hills–also known as the ‘Black Beverly Hills’, and will stand as a coming of age tale. The hour-long drama focuses on a group of teens, who all come from affluent backgrounds, navigating through the Los Angeles-based neighborhood.
Sweet Life is co-created by Scandal producer Raamla Mohamed, along with Issa Rae, of course, who will both write and executive produce the series, as well.
