There’s a New Whitney Houston Documentary on the Way, and It’s Coming to a Theater Near You

Although it’s been six years since we lost vocal powerhouse Whitney Houston, her memory so gracefully continues to live on. Merely seven months after the controversial premiere of Showtime’s unauthorized docufilm, Whitney: Can I Be Me, Roadside Attractions and Miramax are teaming up to release an exclusive Whitney Houston documentary, simply titled, Whitney.

Directed by Academy Award-winning filmmaker Kevin Macdonald, Whitney, which is set to make its debut this summer, will chronicle the late singer’s tumultuous life and career.

“I approached Whitney’s life like a mystery story; why did someone with so much raw talent and beauty self-destruct so publicly and painfully?” Macdonald says.

Reportedly, the film will feature unreleased recordings, rare never-before-seen home footage, videos of Houston’s live performances, and acapellas of the legend’s greatest hits.

Macdonald–who’s also known for the 2012 Bob Marley documentary, Marley, was given full access to the archives of Houston’s estate. This project also happens to be the first and only to be greenlit by Houston’s family.

“I was lucky enough to have Pat Houston and Whitney Houston’s estate in this quest. They entrusted me with the ‘keys to the vault’ while giving me complete freedom to follow the story wherever it went,” he told PRNewsWire. “At heart, Whitney is an intimate family story that reveals a new side to a woman who even her most die-hard fans never knew.”

Houston’s sister-in-law Patricia Houston (former manager and current executor of estate) will serve as an executive producer, along with Nicole David, Zanne Devine, Rosanne Korenberg, Joe Patrick, and Altitude Film Entertainment.

“To tell Whitney’s story, you have to know her story,” Patricia added. “We could not be more excited that Whitney’s fans will have this authoritative and definitive documentary, chronicling the full arc of her career and the scope of her entire life. This is an amazing retrospective that celebrates Whitney with never-before-seen footage, and Kevin [Macdonald] approaches her life with no blinders on. He captures all of Whitney’s magic, and he does not ignore the hard times. This is a film that will truly thrill all who knew and loved her as a musician, actress, model, and so much more.”

The Whitney Houston documentary will hit U.S. theaters on July 6th.
