It looks like the road to survival continues. Lifetime’s Surviving R. Kelly shook over 26 million viewers up when it made its debut back in January. The six-part docuseries detailed the number of sexual violence allegations penned against prominent singer-songwriter R. Kelly and the battered women behind them. Now, the network has decided to come back with a two-hour-long special, titled Surviving R. Kelly: The Impact, Deadline exclusively reports.
Hosted by award-winning journalist Soledad O’Brien, the forthcoming follow-up will explore the effect of Surviving R. Kelly in our culture and how it has elevated the discussion of such an uncomfortable topic in today’s society: sexual misconduct.
Instantly becoming a trending topic throughout social media, Surviving R. Kelly sparked heartbreaking conversations from family, friends, and even fans all over the globe. Stories were told, so many voices were heard. Questions arose, answers that we weren’t prepared for were given.
Shortly after the premiere, the controversy began. Kelly‘s label, RCA Records, cut ties with him, and in February, merely seven weeks post-airing, he was hit with 10 counts of aggravated sexual abuse.
The National Sexual Assault Hotline was said to have received a 27% increase in their call volume during the show.
Surviving R. Kelly: The Impact is scheduled to air on Saturday, May 4th, at 10/9c. It will reportedly feature footage from the original documentary, interviews with legal experts, psychologists, and a deeper look into Kelly’s appalling one-on-one with Gayle King.
