For the first time in 16 years, American Hip-Hop group Gang Starr formerly consisting of MC Guru and DJ Premier, dropped new music and an album is not far behind. Recently, a video was released for the single “Family and Loyalty” featuring one of the best rappers going today, J Cole. Another video was released for the single bad Name. The videos in various ways pay homage to MC Guru passed away in 2010 after a fatal heart attack.
Gang Starr started out with Guru and Mike Dee, but in 1989 the duo split up. That turned out to be a blessing in disguise though because Guru joined forces with DJ Premier then known as Waxmaster C, which is when things really took off for the group. From there, came hits like Mass Appeal, Here Today Gone Tomorrow, Moment of Truth and let’s not forget about Just To Get A Rep.
Gang Starr’s catalog speaks for itself because it helped usher in a new wave of hip at a crucial time in society and the African American community.
