For the first time in 16 years, American Hip-Hop group Gang Starr formerly consisting of MC Guru and DJ Premier, dropped new music and an album is not far behind. If you were a fan of hip hop in the late 80s through the early 2000s then you know the mark Gang Starr had on the music scene. In fact, they are in the conversation when you talk about the top rapper/DJ duos of all time. Gang Starr pioneered the Jazz Rap sound. The new Gang Starr One Of The Best Yet album will be released on November 1st.

Recently, a video was released for the single “Family and Loyalty” featuring one of the best rappers going today, J Cole. Another video was released for the single bad Name. The videos in various ways pay homage to MC Guru passed away in 2010 after a fatal heart attack.

Gang Starr started out with Guru and Mike Dee, but in 1989 the duo split up. That turned out to be a blessing in disguise though because Guru joined forces with DJ Premier then known as Waxmaster C, which is when things really took off for the group. From there, came hits like Mass Appeal, Here Today Gone Tomorrow, Moment of Truth and let’s not forget about Just To Get A Rep.

Gang Starr’s catalog speaks for itself because it helped usher in a new wave of hip at a crucial time in society and the African American community. The new album, One of The Best Yet, comes out on November 1 and will utilize that DJ Premier sound that helped cultivate them into one of the best groups of their time.

One of The Best Yet will featuring some of the top artists of this generation and prior including Q-Tip, Ne-Yo, Royce Da 5’9, Talib Kweli and many more. As for the timing of why the time is now for new music, according to DJ Premer, it was done in the right timing.

“I never lost faith, or wavered,” he said. “I still felt it inside of me, it just happened to be nine years later [after Guru’s passing]. We all want the things we want right now, but I am a patient guy. I hung in there and I just kept believing.”
